Polarization-insensitive optical spectral inversion without frequency shift based on four-wave mixing in semiconductor optical amplifiers

Abstract

Two schemes for polarization-insensitive optical spectral inversion without frequency shift based on four-wave mixing are proposed, both utilizing a conventional semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and two pump waves. The significant advantages of the configurations include their simplicity, effective suppression of the signal and one of the pump waves and a reduction in the noise associated with these polarizations. In addition, the schemes offer broad operating parameter ranges from narrow frequency detunings using short devices in one proposed configuration (type I) and wide frequency detunings using long devices in a second configuration (type II). A specific feature of the second scheme is that polarization-sensitive SOAs can be utilized without compromising the operating characteristics.

Polarization-independent optical spectral inversion without frequency shift using a single semiconductor optical amplifier

Yanhua Hong, S. Bandyopadhyay, Paul S. J. Spencer +1 more

Two schemes for polarization-independent spectral inversion without frequency shift have been experimentally demonstrated. Both schemes use two pump beams and a polarization-insensitive semiconductor amplifier. Polarization-independent optical spectral inversion without frequency shift was obtained for lower wavelength detuning between the two pump beams in the first scheme and for large wavelength detuning in the second scheme. Combining these two schemes allows polarization-independent spectral inversion without frequency shift to be obtained over a quite wide frequency range. The results are in good qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions.

Polarization insensitive optical spectral inversion without frequency shift by four-wave mixing using two counter-propagating pump waves

Jianming Tang, K.A. Shore

A novel technique for creating polarization insensitive phase conjugate waves without frequency shifting by using four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is proposed, which utilizes two counter-propagating orthogonally polarized pump fields and one conventional polarization independent SOA.

Polarisation independent spectral inversion without frequency shift in a semiconductor optical amplifier

Yanhua Hong, S. Bandyopadhyav, Paul S. J. Spencer +1 more

This paper describes an experimental study of two schemes for polarisation independent spectral inversion without frequency shift in a semiconductor amplifier. It has been found that conjugate beam from the front facet of the SOA is polarisation insensitive when the frequency detuning between the two pump beams is less than 200 GHz and a polarisation insensitive conjugate beam without frequency shift is obtained when the frequency detuning between the two pumps is larger than 180 GHz. The experimental results has been found to be in good qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Frequency-domain model of multiwave mixing in bulk semiconductor optical amplifiers

M.A. Summerfield, R.S. Tucker

We present a new steady-state frequency-domain model of highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing in bulk semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA's). The model can handle a large number of interacting optical fields and situations in which the nonlinear interactions are complex. It accounts for the longitudinal dependence of the population inversion in the SOA and the spectral dependence of the gain. Carrier population pulsations, spectral-hole burning, and carrier heating, which dominate the nonlinear response over bandwidths into the terahertz range, are included. The model also includes output amplified spontaneous emission noise and allows important system parameters such as signal-to-noise ratio and noise figure to be estimated. A number of applications of the model are presented in which good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is demonstrated.

Spectral inversion with no wavelength shift based on four-wave mixing with orthogonal pump beams

Kyo Inoue

Generation of phase-conjugate light with no wavelength shift that utilizes four-wave mixing (FWM) with two orthogonal pump beams is discussed. Owing to the polarization properties of nondegenerate FWM, phase-conjugate light generated at the original signal wavelength can be obtained. An experiment using dispersion-shifted fiber as an optical nonlinear medium confirms the proposed scheme.

Polarization decay in ultrafast collinear nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a semiconductor amplifier

Steven C. Hughes

The time evolution of the nondegenerate four-wave mixing polarization in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is investigated theoretically by solution of the semiconductor Bloch equations, including all the relevant scattering processes. The results are in direct agreement with recent experimental measurements, showing that a treatment of coherent and incoherent effects in SOA's on the level of a microscopic theory is highly desirable.
