Abstract

In this paper we show that the codirectional Kerr nonlinear coupler can generate Schrodinger-cat states, in particular, Yurke-Stoler states based on the values of the interaction parameters. We show this analytically through s-parameterized single-mode quasiprobability distribution functions. We confirm this fact also in the evolution of the phase distribution.

Single-mode quantum properties of the codirectional Kerr nonlinear coupler: frequency mismatch and exact solution

Faisal A A El-Orany, M Sebawe Abdalla, Jan Peřina

In this paper, we investigate the single-mode quantum properties of the codirectional Kerr nonlinear coupler when the frequency mismatch is involved and a condition for an exact solution of equations of motion is fulfilled. Particularly, we investigate quadrature and principal squeezing, Wigner function, quadrature distribution, phase distribution and phase variance. We show that the quadrature squeezing and the phase variance can exhibit collapse–revival and collapse–revival–subrevival phenomena, respectively, based on the values of the detuning parameter. Furthermore, we analytically demonstrate that the system can generate cat states, in particular, Yurke–Stoler states.

A simple proposal for generation of various classes of cat-like state via quantum nonlinear optical processes

A Noury, Mohammad Kazem Tavassoly

Abstract Generation of nonclassical states is a necessary requirement for all quantum science and technology protocols. In this regard, Schrödinger cat states, as quantum superpositions of mocroscopically distinguishable coherent states with equal amplitude and opposite phases, have been of great importance in recent years. In this paper, using some appropriate nonlinear optical media, a theoretical scheme is employed to generate various classes of cat-like states with the help of the connection between quantum and nonlinear optics. In fact, we have exploited a single simple method to produce even, odd and also Yurke-Stoler cat-like states by considering different input states such as coherent squeezed, squeezed coherent, photon-added coherent, pair coherent and trio coherent states. To achieve the purpose, we extensively use cross-Kerr interaction and its further generalizations to higher-orders. Projective measurement is the original conception behind the represented approach by which distinct types of nonclassical states are obtained. At last, we pay our attention to the unavoidable effect of field dissipation and show that in most of the above-studied states we may still achieve the cat-like states, however, with attenuated amplitudes.

Phase distribution in the Yurke-Stoler states

H K Das

The phase distribution of the Yurke-Stoler state generated as a result of non-linear interaction by an optical signal, is studied making use of the Hermitian phase operator formalism of Pegg and Barnett. The time evolution of the mean and variance of the phase operator and illustrated graphically.

Quantum statistical properties of codirectional and contradirectional nonlinear couplers with phase mismatch

Jan Peřina, J Perina

The authors examine both codirectional and contradirectional nonlinear couplers operating by second harmonic generation with particular attention to the effect of linear and nonlinear phase mismatches under the assumption that the second harmonic mode is stimulated by a strong coherent field. Quantum statistical properties are described by a photocount distribution, its factorial moments, quadrature and integrated intensity variances and the uncertainty product, with particular attention to generation and transmission of nonclassical light. Incident beams can be coherent or squeezed with mixed external noise. It is shown that, in general, the nonlinear phase mismatch, which effectively makes the interaction weaker, may reduce nonclassical effects and their transmission to signal linear waveguide. However, as a consequence of the phase mismatches some initial regimes of the interaction can be repeated, which leads to new interesting nonclassical effects.

Kerr nonlinear coupler with varying linear coupling coefficient

Natalia Korolkova, Jan Peřina

We investigate a codirectional nonlinear coupler composed of two Kerr nonlinear waveguides. Unlike the conventional device, the linear coupling between the guides is supposed to be a variable function of the propagation distance. We calculate quantum statistical and dynamical properties of the Kerr nonlinear coupler with a coherent input and analyse the influence of coupling variation on oscillations in mean photon number. The possibility to control the switching characteristics and principal squeezing effect by adjusting the form of coupling function is shown.
