Superconducting phase of a two-chain Hubbard model

Abstract

The exponent ${\mathit{K}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}$ and pair-field-correlation functions are calculated for a two-chain Hubbard model with an exact numerical diagonalization method. Our calculations clearly indicate that a superconducting phase appears for a wide range of Coulomb strength, where ${\mathit{K}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}$ and pair-field correlation functions are enhanced compared to the noninteracting system. The interchain pairing appears predominantly and thus our mechanism predicts an anisotropic superconductivity.

Renormalization group approach for highly anisotropic two-dimensional fermion systems: Application to coupled Hubbard chains

S. Moukouri

I apply a two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to the anisotropic two-dimensional Hubbard model. As a prelude to this study, I compare the numerical results to the exact one for the tight-binding model. I find a ground-state energy which agrees with the exact value up to four digits for systems as large as $24\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}25$. I then apply the method to the interacting case. I find that for strong Hubbard interaction, the ground state is dominated by magnetic correlations. These correlations are robust even in the presence of strong frustration. Interchain pair tunneling is negligible in the singlet and triplet channels and is not enhanced by frustration. For weak Hubbard couplings, due to interchain interaction, interchain nonlocal singlet pair tunneling is enhanced and magnetic correlations are strongly reduced. This suggests a possible superconductive ground state. The pairing mechanism is reminiscent of the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism.

Superconducting, magnetic, and charge correlations in the doped two-chain Hubbard model

Yoshihiro Asai

We have studied the superconducting, magnetic, and charge correlation functions and the spin excitation spectrum in the doped two-chain Hubbard model by projector Monte Carlo and Lanczos diagonalization methods. The exponent of the interchain singlet superconducting correlation function, \ensuremath{\gamma}, is found to be close to 2.0 as long as two distinct noninteracting bands cross the Fermi level. Magnetic and charge correlation functions decay more rapidly than or as fast as the interchain singlet superconducting correlation function along the chains. The superconducting correlation in the doped two-chain Hubbard model is the most long-range correlation studied here. Implications of the results for the possible universality class of the doped two-chain Hubbard model are discussed.

Enhanced pair correlation functions in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Takashi Yanagisawa

In this study we have computed the pair correlation functions in the two-dimensional Hubbard model using a quantum Monte Carlo method. We employ a new diagonalization algorithm in the quantum Monte Carlo method which is free from the negative sign problem. We show that the d-wave pairing correlation function is indeed enhanced slightly for the positive on-site Coulomb interaction U when doping away from the half-filling. When the system size becomes large, the pair correlation function P d increases for U > 0 compared to the non-interacting case, while P d is suppressed for U > 0 when the system size is small. The enhancement ratio P d [ U ]/ P d [ U = 0] will give a criterion on the existence of superconductivity. The ratio P d [ U ]/ P d [ U = 0] increases almost linearly ∝ L when the system size L × L is increased. This increase is a good indication of the existence of a superconducting phase in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. There is, however, no enhancement of pair correlation functions in the half-filled case, which indicates the absence of superconductivity without hole doping.

Superconductivity in a two-band Hubbard model

Hideo Aoki, Kazuhiko Kuroki

As a model for high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ superconductors, a two-band Hubbard model is proposed. When the Coulomb interactions are introduced between the \ensuremath{\alpha} and \ensuremath{\beta} orbitals, an effective attraction of carriers in the \ensuremath{\beta} (doped) band is shown to arise in an appropriate condition. The quantum Monte Carlo method is used to confirm the occurrence of Cooper pairing in finite two-band Hubbard systems. The attraction, which also appears in the density-density correlation, enhances the on-site singlet Cooper pair-pair correlation in the \ensuremath{\beta} band and suppresses the antiferromagnetic spin-spin correlation in the \ensuremath{\alpha} band. The criterion for the pairing and the nature of the pairing are discussed. Thus we provide a mechanism of superconductivity specific to strongly correlated two-band systems.

Superconducting correlations in Hubbard chains with correlated hopping

Liliana Arrachea, Armando A. Aligia, Eduardo R. Gagliano +2 more

We consider an extended one-dimensional Hubbard model in which the magnitude of the hopping between two sites for particles with given spin depends on the occupation of the states with opposite spin at both sites. Diagonalizing exactly finite-size chains, and using known results of conformal field theory we delimit the regions of parameters for which two particles bind and the pair superconducting correlation functions are the dominant ones at large distances. For Coulomb repulsion U smaller than a critical density-dependent value ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$ and any density, there are ranges of the ratios of the hopping parameters for which the superconducting fluctuations dominate. At half filling, for parameters within this range, a transition from a regime with dominant superconducting correlations to an insulating state takes place as a function of U. We also study the model for parameters near a recently found exactly solvable limit in which the number of doubly occupied sites is conserved.

Fidelity study of the superconducting phase diagram in the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model

Chunjing Jia, Brian Moritz, Cheng-Chien Chen +2 more

Extensive numerical studies have demonstrated that the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model contains much of the key physics in cuprate high-temperature superconductors. However, there is no definitive proof that the Hubbard model truly possesses a superconducting ground state or, if it does, of how it depends on model parameters. To answer these longstanding questions, we study an extension of the Hubbard model including an infinite-range $d$-wave pair field term, which precipitates a superconducting state in the $d$-wave channel. Using exact diagonalization on 16-site square clusters, we study the evolution of the ground state as a function of the strength of the pairing term. This is achieved by monitoring the fidelity metric of the ground state, as well as determining the ratio between the two largest eigenvalues of the $d$-wave pair/spin/charge-density matrices. The calculations show a $d$-wave superconducting ground state in doped clusters bracketed by a strong antiferromagnetic state at half filling controlled by the Coulomb repulsion $U$ and a weak short-range checkerboard charge ordered state at larger hole doping controlled by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. We also demonstrate that negative ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ plays an important role in facilitating $d$-wave superconductivity.
