Abstract

Green function metheod is introduced to investigate ultracold dilute gas of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice which can be described by a Bose–Hubbard model. The superfluid–Mott insulator phase transition condition is determined by the related energy-band structure with an obvious interpretation of the transition mechanism.

Quantum phase transition of condensed bosons in optical lattices

J.-Q. Liang, J.-Q. Liang, W.M. Liu

In this paper we study the superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition of ultracold dilute gas of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice by means of Green function method and Bogliubov transformation as well. The superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition condition is determined by the energy-band structure with an obvious interpretation of the transition mechanism. Moreover the superfluid phase is explained explicitly from the energy spectrum derived in terms of Bogliubov approach.

QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITION OF DIPOLAR BOSONS IN OPTICAL LATTICES

Qiuyan Li, Zhengwei Xie, Zai-Dong Li

In terms of the Green's function method we study the energy spectrum of dipolar boson atoms with the dipole-dipole interaction in an optical lattice. The Superfluid-Mott-Insulator phase transition condition of the dipolar bosons is determined from the energy-band structure of the excitation spectrum as a function of interatomic repulsion, dipolar bosons interaction and the tunnel coupling constants. The superfluid phase is explained explicitly from the energy spectrum derived in terms of the Bogoliubov approach as well.

Energy Spectrum of Two-Component Bose–Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

Han Jiu-Rong, Liu Jin-Ming, Jing Hui +1 more

Abstract With the method of Green’s function, we investigate the energy spectra of two-component ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices. We find that there are two energy bands for each component. The critical condition of the superfluid-Mott insulator phase transition is determined by the energy band structure. We also find that the nearest neighboring and on-site interactions fail to change the structure of energy bands, but shift the energy bands only. According to the conditions of the phase transitions, three stable superfluid and Mott insulating phases can be found by adjusting the experiment parameters. We also discuss the possibility of observing these new phases and their transitions in further experiments.

Energy spectra of ultracold Bose–Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

Han Jiu-Rong, Yufan Wang, Weiqiang Liu

We show the energy band structure of ultracold atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices: two energy bands for bosonic atoms and a single band for fermionic atoms. The energy band structure can determine the superfluid Mott-insulator phase transition. We find the phase diagram of the mixture by means of path integral, and the phase transition depending on the experimental parameters. The possibility of observing these new phases and their transitions in future experiments is discussed.

Cold Bosonic Atoms in Optical Lattices

Dieter Jaksch, Christoph Bruder, J. I. Cirac +2 more

The dynamics of an ultracold dilute gas of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice can be described by a Bose-Hubbard model where the system parameters are controlled by laser light. We study the continuous (zero temperature) quantum phase transition from the superfluid to the Mott insulator phase induced by varying the depth of the optical potential, where the Mott insulator phase corresponds to a commensurate filling of the lattice (``optical crystal''). Examples for formation of Mott structures in optical lattices with a superimposed harmonic trap and in optical superlattices are presented.
