Abstract

The spin exchange and chemi-ionization cross sections for the metastable helium atom-lithium atom in the ground state system have been calculated. Using data on the interaction potentials obtained in this study, the spin exchange cross sections are determined for the first time for the He(23 S 1)-Li(22 S 1/2) system in the interval of collision energies from 5 × 10−3 to 16 eV.

Chemi-ionization and spin exchange upon collisions of metastable helium atoms with potassium atoms in the ground state

Victor A. Kartoshkin, G. V. Klement’ev

The spin exchange and chemi-ionization cross sections have been calculated for the metastable helium atom-potassium atom system in the ground state. The data on the spin exchange cross section in the system He(23 S 1)-K(42 S 1/2) have been obtained for the first time. The cross sections were calculated for the collision energies ranging from 2 × 10−4 to 60 × 10−4 au The chemi-ionization cross sections obtained have been compared with the data in the literature.

Angular Momentum Transfer at the Chemo-ionization and Spin Exchange Processes. Interaction between Spin Polarized Metastable Helium Atoms

Victor A. Kartoshkin

In the collision of spin-polarized atoms, the transmission of electron polarization between colliding particles is possible. A similar situation occurs in a collision, for example, between alkali atoms in the ground state. If one of the colliding particles is in an excited state and its energy is sufficient for ionization of the collision partner, then along with the elastic process (spin exchange), an inelastic process (ionization) is also possible, as a result of these processes polarization can also be transferred to the partner. Simultaneously occurring elastic and inelastic processes at the collision between two helium atoms are possible if these atoms are in the metastable (23S1) state. The paper discusses the interaction between spin-polarized metastable atoms of helium-3 and helium-4 isotopes under conditions of optical pumping of atoms. Complex interaction potentials of the atoms under consideration were constructed and on their basis, the spin exchange and chemo-ionization cross-sections were calculated. Using these cross-sections, expressions for the transfer of orientation and alignment from one atom to another were obtained.

Spin-Exchange Collisions in the K–Li System

Victor A. Kartoshkin

Abstract Spin-exchange cross sections and the magnetic-resonance frequency shift in collision of lithium and potassium atoms in the ground state have been calculated for the first time. The cross sections are calculated based on the data on the singlet ($$X{}^{1}{{\Sigma }^{ + }}$$) and triplet ($$a{}^{3}{{\Sigma }^{ + }}$$) interaction potentials of 39K7Li dimer. A passage from the energy dependences to the temperature ones of the real and imaginary parts of the complex spin-exchange cross section yields information about both the broadening of the magnetic resonance line of the atoms under study and the magnetic-resonance frequency shift in their collision.

Collisions of Lithium Atoms in Ground State. Complex Spin-Exchange Cross Sections

Victor A. Kartoshkin

Abstract Interaction of two polarized lithium atoms (7Li) is analyzed. When such atoms collide with each other, spin exchange, i.e., an exchange of electron polarization between colliding atoms, takes place in addition to elastic scattering. Simultaneously with polarization transfer, spin exchange leads to frequency shift of the magnetic resonance of colliding atoms. Based on the data on potentials describing interaction between two lithium atoms, energy dependences of spin-exchange cross section and cross section of frequency shift of magnetic resonance are calculated for the first time.

Spin-exchange cross sections for hydrogen-atom–alkali-metal-atom collisions

H. R. Cole, R. E. Olson

The pseudopotential molecular-structure method has been used to calculate the ${X}^{1}$\ensuremath{\Sigma} and ${a}^{3}$\ensuremath{\Sigma} interaction potentials for the alkali-metal-atom--hydrogen-atom systems. These potentials were then used in a quantum-mechanical calculation to determine the spin-exchange cross sections in the energy range from 2.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$ eV to 2.5 eV. The cross sections follow the general form ${Q}^{1/2}$=a-b lnv. However, abundant structure on the cross sections is present due to orbiting resonances induced by the deeply bound well of the ${X}^{1}$\ensuremath{\Sigma} molecular state. The spin-exchange cross sections range from 17\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}16}$ to 25\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}16}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ at room temperature for H(F=1) transferring to H(F=0) in collision with unpolarized lithium and cesium, respectively.
