Abstract

The dissipative dynamics of a confined single exciton coupled to a reservoir is investigated beyond the Born‐Markov approximation. Specifically, the resonance fluorescence main features are studied as the coupling strength is varied with respect to the driving laser intensity. To the lowest order, the effective Hamiltonian is treated stochastically, from which an analytical solution of the fluorescence spectrum shows the basic features of a non‐Markovian noise induced dynamics. Finally, we discuss some aspects of higher‐order effects in the non‐Markovian system‐bath dynamics.

Optical signatures of non-Markovian behavior in open quantum systems

Dara P. S. McCutcheon

We derive an extension to the quantum regression theorem which facilitates the calculation of two-time correlation functions and emission spectra for systems undergoing non-Markovian evolution. The derivation exploits projection operator techniques, with which we obtain explicit equations of motion for the correlation functions, making only a second-order expansion in the system-environment coupling strength and invoking the Born approximation at a fixed initial time. The results are used to investigate a driven semiconductor quantum dot coupled to an acoustic phonon bath, where we find the non-Markovian nature of the dynamics has observable signatures in the form of phonon sidebands in the resonance fluorescence emission spectrum. Furthermore, we use recently developed non-Markovianity measures to demonstrate an associated flow of information from the phonon bath back into the quantum dot exciton system.

Phonon-Induced Effects in Quantum Dot Absorption and Resonance Fluorescence with Hierarchy of Pure States

Sebastian Toivonen, Kimmo Luoma

We investigate a quantum dot (QD) system coupled to a vibrational environment with a super-Ohmic spectral density and weakly to a leaky cavity mode, a model relevant for semiconductor-based single-photon sources. The phonon coupling induces dephasing and broadens the absorption and emission line shapes, while the weakly coupled cavity mode leads to effective driving of the QD. To capture non-Markovian effects, we use non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion and its hierarchical extension the Hierarchy of Pure States to compute multitime correlation functions underlying absorption and resonance fluorescence spectra. We present numerical results for the absorption spectra at strong phonon coupling and finite temperature, as well as for resonance fluorescence spectra at varying phonon coupling strengths and temperatures, and analyse the visibility of the resonance fluorescence spectra to provide insights into how phonon coupling and thermal effects influence the spectral features.

Stochastic wavefunction methods beyond the Born - Markov and rotating-wave approximations

P Stenius, Ataç İmamoğlu

We develop a stochastic wavefunction approach to analyse non-Markovian system - reservoir interactions. Provided that the reservoir density operator is Gaussian, this approach can be used to treat strong reservoir coupling beyond the Born and rotating-wave approximations. The memory effects associated with the finite reservoir correlation time are incorporated into the dynamics by expanding the initial system using fictitious harmonic oscillator modes, so that the new enlarged system has Markovian dissipative interactions. We apply the new approach to the analysis of exciton - phonon interaction in a quasi-zero-dimensional GaAs structure and predict a strong deviation from the Born - Markov result.

Theoretical study of quantum dissipation and laser-noise effects on the atomic response

Ouafae El Akramine, A. Makhoute, Mohamed Zitane +1 more

The nonlinear dynamics of dissipative quantum systems in incoherent laser fields is studied in the framework of a master equation with the random telegraph model describing the laser noise and the Markovian approximation dealing with the system-bath couplings. Floquet theory and time-dependent perturbation methods are used to facilitate both analytical and numerical solutions. We develop a theoretical formalism that provides a powerful tool for the detailed analysis of the dissipative quantum dynamics of multilevel systems driven by intense stochastic laser fields. It is found that the system relaxes to a steady state from the effect of the laser phase and frequency noise and the kinetics of this relaxation increases with the addition of dissipative terms, introduced by the coupling to the reservoir. Amplitude fluctuations show a different behavior. Other results concerning the destruction of quantum coherence and the dynamical localization will be established and further relaxation mechanisms such as spontaneous emission and the ionization process will also be considered.

Dissipative dynamics of a driven two-level quantum dot interacting with a structured reservoir with two-peaked spectrum

Xiaoyong Guo, Zhongzhou Ren, Guangjie Guo +1 more

In this paper, we investigate the dissipative dynamics of a driven two-level quantum dot weakly coupled with a structured reservoir that is characterized by a double-peaked spectral function. We discuss the time-dependent dissipation coefficients and the Bloch vector by using a time-local non-markovian master equation. It is shown that the decay rates display temporarily negative values that can be manipulated by the distance between the two peaks in the spectral function. For the strong pumping case, the nonsecular effect gives rise to the non-markovian dynamics of the Bloch vector. However, for the weak pumping case, the non-markovian dynamics show up when contributions from secular and nonsecular terms are comparable. In the long time limit, the signature of non-markovian dynamics disappears and the behavior obeys Fermi’s golden rule.

Non-Markovian Quantum Dynamics in a Squeezed Reservoir

Valentin Link, Walter T. Strunz, Kimmo Luoma

We study non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system system interacting with a nonstationary squeezed bosonic reservoir. We derive exact and approximate descriptions for the open system dynamics. Focusing on the spin boson model, we compare exact dynamics with Redfield theory and a quantum optical master equation for both short and long time dynamics and in non-Markovian and Markov regimes. The squeezing of the bath results in asymptotic oscillations in the stationary state, which are captured faithfully by the Redfield master equation in the case of weak coupling. Furthermore, we find that the bath squeezing direction modifies the effective system-environment coupling strength and, thus, the strength of the dissipation.
