Abstract

Recently, spontaneous symmetry breaking of atom population is observed in parametrically driven magneto-optical trap system. We study the SSB theoretically by changing of variable in rotating frame and simplifying the interaction between atoms. We simulate the system varying interaction strength and diffusion constant, then compare with the experimental results.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking of Population in a Nonadiabatically Driven Atomic Trap: An Ising-Class Phase Transition

Kihwan Kim, Myoung-Sun Heo, Ki-Hwan Lee +4 more

We have observed spontaneous symmetry breaking of the population of Brownian particles between two moving potentials in the spatiotemporally symmetric system. Cold atoms preferentially occupy one of the dynamic double-well potentials, produced in the parametrically driven dissipative magneto-optical trap far from equilibrium, above a critical number of atoms. We find that the population asymmetry, which may be interpreted as the biased Brownian motion, can be qualitatively described by the mean-field Ising-class phase transition. This in situ study may be useful for investigation of dynamic phase transition or temporal behavior of critical phenomena.

Scaling of thermal hysteretic behavior in a parametrically modulated cold atomic system

Wanhee Lee, Ji-Hyoun Kim, Jong Geun Hwang +2 more

We observe the hysteresis of a spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) transition in a parametrically modulated magneto-optical trap by sweeping the total number of atoms and study thermal hysteretic behavior in the system by measuring the scaling exponent of hysteresis. It is shown that the relaxation time of the order parameter in the SSB transition becomes larger near the critical number. The scaling exponent of the hysteresis area with number sweeping rate is found to be 0.64±0.04, which is consistent with the value in the mean-field model.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and collapse in bosonic Josephson junctions

G. Mazzarella, Luca Salasnich

We investigate an attractive atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped by a double-well potential in the axial direction and by a harmonic potential in the transverse directions. We obtain numerically a quantum phase diagram which includes all the three relevant phases of the system: Josephson, spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB), and collapse. We consider also the coherent dynamics of the BEC and calculate the frequency of population-imbalance mode in the Josephson phase and in the SSB phase up to the collapse. We show that these phases can be observed by using ultracold vapors of $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms in a magneto-optical trap.

Transient behavior of atomic population at unstable State in parametrically driven magneto-optical trap

Myoung-Sun Heo, Yong Hee Kim, Heung‐Ryoul Noh +1 more

We have investigated nonequilibrium stochastic properties of trapped cold atoms in MOT. In particular, the transient phenomena of atomic population near the unstable state has been observed. Relevant asymptotic behavior of relaxation rate has been quantitatively measured and anomalous fluctuation qualitatively discussed.
