Line width measurement of semiconductor lasers using quantum interference in electromagnetically induced transparency: a quantum heterodyning method

Abstract

A technique is described in which electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra are used to measure laser line width. Two independent sets of EIT measurements are carried out in the presence of 85Rb and 87Rb atomic isotopes. Conventional self-heterodyning detection is used to obtain standard values of laser line width. A comparison shows that the estimated laser line widths in these measurements are very close to each other.

Stability Assessment of Rydberg Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Locking via Optical Heterodyne Spectroscopy

Qiuyu Yin, Yanzhao Liang, Haitao Lin +2 more

Frequency locking to reference atomic lines using Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been recently introduced as an inexpensive and reliable technique for laser frequency stabilization. In this work, we carry out a systematic study of this technique using heterodyne beat spectroscopy. Two different commercial semi-conductor lasers are locked to the same reference frequency using EIT locking, and their relative frequency stability is analyzed and continuously monitored in real time. A substantial improvement in the laser frequency stability is achieved through searching for the optimal proportional–integral settings and EIT probe laser powers. The results show that the cutoff frequency of the beat signal can be lowered to less than 500 kHz. We also compare the frequencies of free running lasers with that of a locked laser and characterize their frequency drifts. This study is important in assessing the use of Rydberg EIT locking in atomic electrometers.

From Laser Induced Line Narrowing To Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Doppler-Broadened System

Ali Javan, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Hwang Lee +1 more

Laser induced line narrowing effect in Doppler broadened systems was discovered thirty years ago. This effect can also be applied to recent experimental studies in high resolution spectroscopy or high precision measurements based on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT). In this report we derive an analytic expression for the linewidth of EIT resonance in a Doppler broadened system. It is shown here that the EIT linewidth is proportional to the Rabi frequency of the driving field and is independent of the Doppler width in a limiting case. This recovers the result found in the laser induced line narrowing effect by Feld and Javan. In the other limit, we recovers the usual power broadening case where the EIT linewidth is proportional to the intensity of the driving field and inversely proportional to the Doppler width.

Spectroscopy of strontium Rydberg states using electromagnetically induced transparency

Sarah Mauger, James Millen, Jones, MPA

We report on the all-optical detection of Rydberg states in an effusive atomic beam of strontium atoms using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Using narrow-linewidth CW lasers we obtain an EIT linewidth of 5MHz. To illustrate the high spectroscopic resolution offered by this method, we have measured isotope shifts of the 5s18d(1)D(2) and 5s19s(1)S(0) Rydberg states. This technique could be applied to high-resolution, non-destructive measurements of ultra-cold Rydberg gases and plasmas.

Coherent laser spectroscopy of rubidium atoms

S. Mitra, Md. Mabud Hossain, Biswajit Ray +3 more

Laser spectroscopy experiments are reported on rubidium atoms by using two or three external cavity diode lasers to study multiple resonance transitions in Λ- and V-type systems as well as on (Λ+V)-type system. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) peaks having sub-natural line-widths are found on the Doppler broadened transmission backgrounds with velocity selective enhanced absorption dips. In the presence of a pump laser, probe spectrum shows enhancement of EIT signal by tuning the control laser frequency when the Λ- and V-type EIT signals are made to overlap. Theoretical analysis is carried out by solving the optical Bloch equations for five-level atomic model under Λ configuration. With the numerically simulated spectra, variation of EIT transmission peak with ground state decay rate and excited state spontaneous decay rate are investigated. Effect of pump Rabi frequency on the transmission peak is also shown.

Dependence of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency on Laser Linewidth

郭瑞民, 肖峰, Cheng Liu +2 more

The influence of the linewidth of coupling laser on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectral width is theoretically investigated. The model to describe the EIT spectral width is based on the standard semi-classical theory. The result shows that the effect of the linewidth of coupling laser is equivalent to an additional relaxation between two ground states in the A-type configuration. A broadening linewidth of coupling laser implies the increasing relaxation between the two ground states, which will make the wider EIT spectral linewidth.
