Abstract

This paper demonstrates optical parametric amplification of a single photon in the high gain regime to experimentally investigate how the information initially contained in its polarization state is distributed over a large number of particles. In particular, this study analyzes how the coherence properties of the input state are transferred to the mesoscopic output field.

Experimental realization of macroscopic coherence by phase-covariant cloning of a single photon

Eleonora Nagali, Tiziano De Angelis, Fabio Sciarrino +1 more

We investigate the multiphoton states generated by high-gain optical parametric amplification of a single injected photon, polarization encoded as a ``qubit.'' The experiment configuration exploits the optimal phase-covariant cloning in the high gain regime. The interference fringe pattern showing the nonlocal transfer of coherence between the injected qubit and the mesoscopic amplified output field involving up to 4000 photons has been investigated. A probabilistic method to extract full information about the multiparticle output wave function has been implemented.

Experimental high-gain quantum-injected optical parametric amplification and multiphoton phase-covariant cloning

Marco B. Caminati, F. De Martini, Fabio Sciarrino

We investigate multiphoton states generated by high-gain optical parametric amplification of a single injected photon—polarization encoded as a qubit. The experimental configuration exploits the optimal phase-covariant cloning. The output state of the apparatus is found to exhibit the quantum superposition property of mesoscopic multiphoton assemblies involving about 300 photons. This work represents an experimental advance toward the test of several fundamental quantum processes in mesoscopic or macroscopic frameworks.

Entanglement, EPR correlations, and mesoscopic quantum superposition by the high-gain quantum injected parametric amplification

Marco B. Caminati, F. De Martini, Riccardo Perris +2 more

We investigate the multiparticle quantum superposition and the persistence of bipartite entanglement of the output field generated by the quantum injected high-gain optical parametric amplification of a single photon. The physical configuration based on the optimal universal quantum cloning has been adopted to investigate how the entanglement and the quantum coherence of the system persists for large values of the nonlinear parametric gain $g$.

Einstein Podolsky Rosen correlations involving mesoscopic quantum systems

Marco B. Caminati

We investigate multiphoton states generated by high‐gain optical parametric amplification of a single injected photon, polarization encoded as a “qubit”. Two different experimental configurations were adopted in order to investigate two different quantum processes: the optimal universal quantum cloning and the optimal phase‐covariant cloning. The output states of the two apparatuses were found to show the quantum superposition property of mesoscopic multi‐photon assemblies and the entanglement characteristics of the “Schroedinger Cat State”. This work represents an experimental attempt to test several fundamental quantum processes in a mesoscopic, or macroscopic frameworks. As it is well known, this is indeed one of the most challenging endavours of modern science.

Amplification of polarization NOON states

Chiara Vitelli, Nicolò Spagnolo, Fabio Sciarrino +1 more

We analyze the quantum states obtained by optical parametric amplification of polarization NOON states. First we study, theoretically and experimentally, the amplification of a two-photon state by a collinear quantum injected optical parametric amplifier (QIOPA). We compare the stimulated emission regime with the spontaneous one, studied by Sciarrino et al. [Phys. Rev. A77, 012324 (2008)]. As a second step, we show that the collinear amplifier cannot be successfully used for amplifying N-photon states with N>2, and we propose to adopt a different scheme, based on a noncollinear QIOPA. We show that the state obtained by the latter amplification process preserves the λ/N feature and exhibits a high resilience to losses. Furthermore, measurement of part of the output state can be adopted to increase the pattern visibility.
