Thermal dispersive optical bistability and absorptive bistability in bulk ZnSe

Ajoy Kumar Kar, B. S. Wherrett

We report successive refractive and then absorptive optical bistability in bulk ZnSe at room temperature, at 35- and 300-mW power levels, respectively, for the 476-nm argon-ion laser line. Analysis shows the results to be consistent with the observed thermal shift of the interband absorption. These first observations of dispersive bistability in bulk ZnSe occur in lowest order for temperature changes as low as 2 K; many bistable orders are obtained.

Evidence That Room Temperature Optical Bistability Is Excitonic In Both Bulk And Multiple-Quantum-Well Gallium Arsenide

Seth Ovadia, H. M. Gibbs, Jack L. Jewell +2 more

The minimum power (=5 mW) for room-temperature optical bistability is very similar in bulk and multiple-quantum-well (MQW) etalons. No exciton resonance is obvious in the absorption spectrum of bulk GaAs at 300 K because it blends into the band edge, but it is present, and its area is two-thirds that of the MOW heavy-hole exciton. It is shown that the excitonic nonlinear index change is consistent with the observed bistability.

Quantum‐Statistical Investigation on the Nonlinear Optical Oscillation in Amorphous Semiconductor GeSe2 Films

Lun‐Biao Xu, Shoufu Cai, Guoxin Xie

Abstract With the quantum‐statistical three‐level cascade Jaynes‐Cummings model, the relationship between the nonlinear optical oscillation phenomena in amorphous vacuum evaporated GeSe2 films and the dynamical correlation of the high‐dense defects are investigated. The collective behaviour of the system shows that the interaction between the incident photon fields and the three defect levels really causes the transmittance oscillating, which was reported recently by Hajto. The calculated results concide with the experiments very well. Also some experimental phenomena are analysed to show the origin in physical mechanism and some interesting possibilities for practices are discussed.
