Multimode model of the superradiant Rayleigh scattering of light by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rarefied atomic gases: Linear analysis

Abstract

A multimode model of the superradiant Rayleigh scattering of light by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rarefied gases is proposed. A limiting transition to the widely used mean-field model is considered. The initial (linear) stage of the scattering process is considered with neglect of the diffraction in the multimode representation. A dependence of the order and number of the angular atomic modes on the parameters of the problem is determined.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of light by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rarefied atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

The superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity light pulses by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rubidium vapor is studied using the model proposed earlier. It is demonstrated that four states with a certain momentum are occupied under the experimental conditions (two states correspond to the forward recoil and two others correspond to the backward recoil). Condensate pulsations between the zero-momentum state and the above states are detected and studied. The corresponding shape of the coherent Rayleigh pulse is found.

Early stage of superradiance from Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the dynamics of matter and optical waves at the early stage of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates. Our analysis is within a spatially dependent quantum model which is capable of providing analytic solutions for the operators of interest. The predictions of the present model are compared to the predictions of a closely related mean-field model, and we provide a procedure that allows one to calculate quantum expectation values by averaging over semiclassical solutions. The coherence properties of the outgoing scattered light are also analyzed, and it is shown that the corresponding correlation functions may provide detailed information about the internal dynamics of the system.

The semiclassical theory for multimode model of light scattering from Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute gas is presented. It permits to obtain the spacial dependence of scattering field inside the condensate and the inhomogeneous distribution of atomic density in recoil clouds.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases

Equations of a semiclassical model of superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases are solved numerically taking into account the excitation of atoms by coherent Rayleigh radiation and their recoil in the backward direction. The evolution of the populations of coherent atomic states with a particular momentum is studied, and the pulse shape and the structure of the spectrum of such scattering are found in relation to the laser beam intensity and the recoil kinetic energy of atoms.
