Néel orders, Haldane gap, and Kondo singlet phase in the anisotropic Kondo chain

Naokazu Shibata, Chikara Ishii, Kazuo Ueda

The ground-state phase diagram of the Kondo chain with an anisotropic exchange is investigated. Four different phases are identified, two types of N\'eel phases, the Haldane phase, and the Kondo singlet phase. The boundaries between these phases in the strong coupling region are determined by mapping to effective models: the spin-1 Heisenberg model with single-ion anisotropy and the Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. It is shown that these transition lines extend to the weak-coupling limit and they are estimated by using the exact numerical diagonalization for a finite system.

Quantum liquid in antiferromagnetic chains: A stochastic geometric approach to the Haldane gap

Hal Tasaki

The S=1 quantum antiferromagnetic chain with the Hamiltonian H= ${\mathcal{J}}_{\mathit{i}}$ ${\mathrm{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{x}}$${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}+1}^{\mathit{x}}$+${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{y}}$${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}+1}^{\mathit{y}}$+\ensuremath{\lambda}${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{z}}$ ${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}+1}^{\mathit{z}}$+D(${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{z}}$${)}^{2}$ is studied. By developing a (path-integral-type) stochastic geometric representation and using the ideas of percolation, we find that the Haldane phase with a unique disordered ground state and a gap can be regarded as ``liquid''. The large-D phase and the N\'eel ordered phase are identified as ``gas'' and ``solid'', respectively. We introduce a new order parameter that distinguishes the Haldane phase from other disordered phases such as the large-D phase or the dimer phase.

Néel and disordered phases of coupled Heisenberg chains withS= ½ toS= 4

S. Moukouri

We use the two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to study the effects of frustration in Heisenberg models for S = ½ to 4 in a two-dimensional anisotropic lattice. We find that as for S = ½ studied previously, the system is made up of nearly disconnected chains at the maximally frustrated point, J d / J ⊥ = 0.5, i.e., the transverse spin–spin correlations decay exponentially. This leads to the following consequences: (i) all half-integer spins systems are gapless, behaving like a sliding Luttinger liquid as for S = ½; (ii) for integer spins, there is an intermediate disordered phase with a spin gap, with the width of the disordered state roughly proportional to the 1D Haldane gap.
