Abstract

By solving linearized wave equations of nonlinear polarization for a medium, we derive the input-output relationship for the propagation of the quantum fluctuations in single-pass second-harmonic generation with arbitrary interaction length. Spectra of quadrature-phase squeezing are calculated from the input-output relations. It is found that the intensity fluctuations of both harmonic and fundamental fields are squeezed below the vacuum fluctuation level. For large interaction length, an arbitrary amount of squeezing can be achieved for the fundamental field whereas only 50% squeezing is possible for the harmonic field. The bandwidth of squeezing is determined by the phase-matching condition and can be very broad in this case. The possibility of a quantum-nondemolition measurement in the process is discussed. Some interesting features in quantum fluctuations of the fields are presented.

Quantum-noise reduction in traveling-wave second-harmonic generation

Ruo-Ding Li, Prem Kumar

We analyze squeezing of both the fundamental and harmonic fields undergoing traveling-wave, second-harmonic generation (SHG) in second-order (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(2)}$) nonlinear media. We take into account depletion of the fundamental field as well as the phase mismatch between the fundamental and harmonic fields. The behavior of the quantum noises on the propagating fields is studied by linearizing the nonlinear operator equations around the mean-field values. We first consider the degenerate case that is applicable to type-I phase-matching geometries, obtaining expressions for squeezing in both the fundamental and harmonic fields under the conditions of perfect phase matching and large phase mismatch. We show that in the case of a large phase mismatch, the intensity-dependent self-phase shift of the fundamental field, arising due to cascading of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(2)}$ nonlinearity, is responsible for the squeezing generation. We also numerically solve the linearized quadrature-operator equations together with the nonlinear mean-field equations. We find that in the case of a finite phase mismatch the harmonic field can be highly squeezed. This is in contrast to the perfectly phase-matched case where the maximum squeezing is limited to 50%. Finally, we analyze the nondegenerate case that applies to type-II phase-matching geometries. Here we show that the commonly used type-II phase-matched SHG process with the input harmonic field in the vacuum state is equivalent to a type-I SHG process in parallel with a degenerate optical-parametric process. The latter causes squeezing in the mode that is polarized orthogonal to the fundamental beam. In the perfect phase-matching case, the squeezing in the orthogonally polarized mode follows the simple expression S=1-\ensuremath{\gamma}, where \ensuremath{\gamma} is the harmonic conversion frequency.

Evolution of quantum noise in the traveling-wave second-order [χ^(2)] nonlinear process

Ruo-Ding Li, Prem Kumar

We analyze the evolution of quantum noise in both the fundamental and the harmonic fields that are undergoing traveling-wave interaction in a second-order [χ(2)] nonlinear medium. Assuming perfect phase matching between the fundamental and the harmonic fields and arbitrary input boundary conditions, the behavior of quantum noise in the propagating fields is studied by linearization of the nonlinear-operator equations around the mean-field values. We first consider the degenerate case that is applicable to type-I phase-matching geometries, obtaining expressions for squeezing in both the fundamental and the harmonic fields. We then analyze the polarization-nondegenerate case that applies to type-II phase-matching geometries. In the special case, when the two orthogonally polarized fundamental inputs are of equal amplitude, we obtain analytical results and show that the type-II phase-matched second-harmonic-generation process can be configured to generate sub-Poissonian light in both polarization components of the fundamental field. Finally, we numerically solve the linearized quadrature-operator equations along with the nonlinear mean-field equations for the general case of type-II phase matching. For both type-I and type-II processes, we find that whenever the fundamental field experiences deamplification it is associated with amplitude squeezing and phase desqueezing. If, in contrast, the fundamental field experiences amplification, then it is accompanied by amplitude desqueezing, but with squeezing in the phase quadrature. The harmonic field is amplitude squeezed if the input boundary condition leads to harmonic conversion and is phase squeezed if the input boundary condition leads to parametric amplification.

Squeezing characteristics analysis of a fundamental-confined second-harmonic generation system by means of a self-consistent method

Joji Maeda, Kazuro Kikuchi

We discuss quantum-fluctuation characteristics of a second-harmonic generation system that uses an optical resonator to confine only the fundamental field. It was predicted that the available amount of squeezing is limited to 1.76 dB for the fundamental output and 9.54 dB for the second-harmonic output, respectively, irrespective of system parameters. However, these predictions are based on low-order perturbation theory and are unavailable if the nonlinear coupling between the fundamental and the second harmonic becomes large. We consider the spatial evolution of the fields and reveal that the maximum amount of squeezing depends on the cavity loss: Even an arbitrary amount of squeezing is possible for both the fundamental output and the second-harmonic output. We also consider the possibility of parametric oscillation of empty cavity modes pumped by the generated second harmonic and derive the following prediction: In a system that uses a type I phase-matched crystal, the oscillation of the side mode hardly occurs because of sum-frequency generation with the fundamental and scarcely imposes any limitations on squeezing. On the other hand, a system with a type II phase-matched crystal suffers from the oscillation of the polarization mode orthogonal to that of the fundamental input, and squeezing of the second-harmonic output is limited to 3 dB.

INVESTIGATION OF QUANTUM FLUCTUATIONS IN A NONLINEAR INTERFEROMETER WITH HARMONIC GENERATION AND COHERENT INTERACTION OF LIGHT AND CS ATOMS

Prashant Srinivasan

In the first part of this thesis, we investigate the propagation of quantum fluctuations in a nonlinear interferometer comprising under conditions of harmonic generation by computer simulations. This investigation assumes idealized conditions such as lossless and uniform nonlinear media, an ideal cavity and ideal photodetectors. After linearizing wave equations for harmonic generation with a coherent state input, we obtain equations for one dimensional spatial propagation of the mean field and quantum fluctuations for initial conditions set by arbitrary interferometer phase. We discover that fluctuations are de-squeezed in the X and Y quadratures as the interferometer phase is tuned. However, we discover that there is are quadratures P-Q obtained by rotating the X-Y quadratures for which squeezing is improved by factors of 10^9. We present a practical idea to implement rotation of X quadrature fluctuations to the Q quadrature by using an ideal empty optical cavity. Signal-to-Noise ratio of the nonlinear interferometer was calculated and compared with that of a linear interferometer with coherent state input. We calculated a maximum performance improvement of a factor of 60 for a normalized propagation length ζ0 = 3 under ideal conditions. In the second part of this thesis, we investigate experimentalarrangements to transfer atomic coherence from light to cesium atoms. We discuss the experimental arrangement to generate coherence under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We measure a continuous wave EIT width of 7.18 MHz and present results for pulsed arrangements.

Squeezing based on nondegenerate frequency doubling internal to a realistic laser

Ulrik L. Andersen, Peter Tidemand‐Lichtenberg, Preben Buchhave

We investigate theoretically the quantum fluctuations of the fundamental field in the output of a nondegenerate second-harmonic generation process occurring inside a laser cavity. Due to the nondegenerate character of the nonlinear medium, a field orthogonal to the laser field is for some operating conditions independent of the fluctuations produced by the laser medium. We show that this fact may lead to perfect squeezing for a certain polarization mode of the fundamental field. The experimental feasibility of the system is also discussed.

Quantum-nondemolition measurement and squeezing in type-II harmonic generation with triple resonance

Z. Y. Ou

Classical and quantum fluctuations are analyzed in the system of type-II harmonic generation where two frequency-degenerate subharmonic fields with orthogonal polarizations are required for the generation of a harmonic field. The two subharmonic fields as well as the harmonic fields are on resonance in a cavity. It is found that there is no self-pulsing behavior as predicted for the type-I case where the intensities of both the subharmonic and the harmonic fields undergo fast oscillation. Instead there exists a threshold that is identified as the onset of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) formed by a subharmonic mode with its polarization orthogonal to the input polarization (not the original modes). When the loss for the harmonic field is small, most of the input power is converted to the output power of the OPO. Under this circumstance, quantum-nondemolition measurements of the input can be performed at certain frequencies. The spectra of squeezing are calculated for the two subharmonic modes and it is found that both modes are squeezed for a certain range of frequency. The output of the OPO is found to exhibit phase squeezing.
