Abstract

Motivated by applicability to quantum operations, quantum information, and quantum probability, we investigate the notion of absolute continuity for operator valued completely positive maps on C∗-algebras, previously introduced by Parthasarathy [in Athens Conference on Applied Probability and Time Series Analysis I (Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1996), pp. 34–54]. We obtain an intrinsic definition of absolute continuity, we show that the Lebesgue decomposition defined by Parthasarathy is the maximal one among all other Lebesgue-type decompositions and that this maximal Lebesgue decomposition does not depend on the jointly dominating completely positive map, we obtain more flexible formulas for calculating the maximal Lebesgue decomposition, and we point out the nonuniqueness of the Lebesgue decomposition as well as a sufficient condition for uniqueness. In addition, we consider Radon–Nikodym derivatives for absolutely continuous completely positive maps that, in general, are unbounded positive self-adjoint operators affiliated to a certain von Neumann algebra, and we obtain a spectral approximation by bounded Radon–Nikodym derivatives. An application to the existence of the infimum of two completely positive maps is indicated, and formulas in terms of Choi’s matrices for the Lebesgue decomposition of completely positive maps in matrix algebras are obtained.

On Operator Valued Measures

Darian McLaren, Sarah Plosker, Christopher Ramsey

We consider positive operator valued measures whose image is the bounded operators acting on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, and we relax, when possible, the usual assumption of positivity of the operator valued measure seen in the quantum information theory literature. We define the Radon-Nikodym derivative of a positive operator valued measure with respect to a complex measure induced by a given quantum state; this derivative does not always exist when the Hilbert space is infinite dimensional in so much as its range may include unbounded operators. We define integrability of a positive quantum random variable with respect to a positive operator valued measure. Emphasis is put on the structure of operator valued measures, and we develop positive operator valued versions of the Lebesque decomposition theorem and Johnson's atomic and nonatomic decomposition theorem. Beyond these generalizations, we make connections between absolute continuity and the "cleanness" relation defined on positive operator valued measures as well as to the notion of atomic and nonatomic measures.

Continuity of certain quantum channel divergences

Morgan Jones

The geometric channel fidelity, the geometric Rényi divergences and the Belavkin--Staszewski relative entropy give converse bounds for capacities, discrimination and estimation. Channels are known only approximately, yet two pairs of channels with equal sums can be arbitrarily close in the diamond norm and have fidelities $0$ and $1$. The remedy is the Arveson--Radon--Nikodym derivative $T$ of one map with respect to the sum $Ω$, whose transpose is the environment effect selecting that map in a Stinespring dilation of $Ω$. In $T$, these quantities and all maximal $f$-divergences of operator convex $f$ are continuous, with explicit dimension-free moduli; for two pairs of channels with the same sum the fidelities differ by at most $2\|T_1-T_2\|_\infty^{1/2}$, which gives Hölder continuity in the diamond norm on such splittings. The fidelity is continuous at a pair of completely positive maps exactly when the Choi matrix of the sum is invertible or the fidelity vanishes: noisy channels of full Kraus rank are continuity points, unitary gates are not.

Radon–Nikodym derivatives of quantum operations

Maxim Raginsky

Given a completely positive (CP) map T, there is a theorem of the Radon–Nikodym type [W. B. Arveson, Acta Math. 123, 141 (1969); V. P. Belavkin and P. Staszewski, Rep. Math. Phys. 24, 49 (1986)] that completely characterizes all CP maps S such that T−S is also a CP map. This theorem is reviewed, and several alternative formulations are given along the way. We then use the Radon–Nikodym formalism to study the structure of order intervals of quantum operations, as well as a certain one-to-one correspondence between CP maps and positive operators, already fruitfully exploited in many quantum information-theoretic treatments. We also comment on how the Radon–Nikodym theorem can be used to derive norm estimates for differences of CP maps in general, and of quantum operations in particular.

When do pieces determine the whole? Extreme marginals of a completely positive map

E. Haapasalo, Teiko Heinosaari, Juha-Pekka Pellonpää

We will consider completely positive maps defined on tensor products of von Neumann algebras and taking values in the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space and particularly certain convex subsets of the set of such maps. We show that when one of the marginal maps of such a map is an extreme point, then the marginals uniquely determine the map. We will further prove that when both of the marginals are extreme, then the whole map is extreme. We show that this general result is the common source of several well-known results dealing with, e.g., jointly measurable observables. We also obtain new insight especially in the realm of quantum instruments and their marginal observables and channels.

1 Normal Completely Positive Maps on the Space of Quantum Operations

Giulio Chiribella, Alessandro Toigo

Quantum supermaps are higher-order maps transforming quantum operations into quantum operations. Here we extend the theory of quantum supermaps, originally formulated in the finite dimensional setting, to the case of higher-order maps transforming quantum operations with input in a separable von Neumann algebra and output in the algebra of the bounded operators on a given separable Hilbert space. In this setting we prove two dilation theorems for quantum supermaps that are the analogues of the Stinespring and Radon-Nikodym theorems for quantum operations. Finally, we consider the case of quantum superinstruments, namely measures with values in the set of quantum supermaps, and derive a dilation theorem for them that is analogue to Ozawa's theorem for quantum instruments. The three dilation theorems presented here show that all the supermaps defined in this paper can be implemented by connecting devices in quantum circuits.

The existence problem for dynamics of dissipative systems in quantum probability

Palle E. T. Jørgensen

Motivated by existence problems for dissipative systems arising naturally in lattice models from quantum statistical mechanics, we consider the following C*-algebraic setting: A given Hermitian dissipative mapping δ is densely defined in a unital C*-algebra A. The identity element in A is also in the domain of δ. Completely dissipative maps δ are defined by the requirement that the induced maps, (aij)→(δ(aij)), are dissipative on the n-by-n complex matrices over A for all n. We establish the existence of different types of maximal extensions of completely dissipative maps. If the enveloping von Neumann algebra of A is injective, we show the existence of an extension of δ which is the infinitesimal generator of a quantum dynamical semigroup of completely positive maps in the von Neumann algebra. If δ is a given well-behaved *-derivation, then we show that each of the maps ±δ is completely dissipative.
