Kinematics of multiphoton ionisation in a laser pulse

Abstract

Previous results for the shift of the ionisation potential of an atom in a laser field are used to investigate the kinematics of multiphoton ionisation in either a laser beam or a laser pulse. Previous results for a laser beam show essentially no shifts of the 'above-threshold ionisation' peaks in the electron energy distribution and only small widths. Results for a laser pulse show the possibility of large shifts and widths growing as the pulse becomes shorter. Electrons which absorb a larger number of photons are predicted to show less shifted and narrower peaks.

Near-threshold behaviour of multiphoton ionisation probabilities

H. Gratl, G. Alber, P. Zoller

The near-threshold behaviour of four-photon ionisation is studied in an energy region where the third laser photon crosses the Rydberg threshold. Particular emphasis is given to the role played by the Stark shift (raising of the ionisation potential) in a Gaussian laser pulse. As a function of the laser frequency the ionisation probability shows (i) a region where individual Rydberg resonances are well resolved, followed by (ii) a smoothly decreasing ionisation probability in the bound-state region, and (iii) an almost energy-independent above-threshold ionisation signal.

Electron energy spectrum after multiphoton ionisation

Michele Crance

For electrons emitted in multiphoton ionisation, the author discusses the relation between the initial energy of the electron and its energy when it has left the light beam. The author focuses on the situation where the pulse duration is of the order of the time it takes for the electron to leave the light beam. The author shows that the position and the width of a peak in the electron energy spectrum depend strongly on the ratio between the maximum intensity and the saturation intensity.

Strong-field effects in electron spectra from multiphoton ionisation

Zofia Białynicka-Birula

The energy spectrum of electrons resulting from multiphoton ionisation is analysed with the help of a simple, exactly soluble model. The weakening of lower energy lines with the increase in laser intensity, observed in experiments, occurs as a strong-field effect. The dependence of the light shift and the light broadening on the laser intensity and on the virtual-bound transitions in the atom are also analysed.

ABOVE-THRESHOLD-IONIZATION BY MULTIPHOTON ABSORPTION OF ATOM UNDER SHORT LASER PULSE

Wenqing Zhang, TAN WEI-HAN, 中国科学院上海光学精密机械研究所,上海,201800

The Above-threshold-ionization(ATI) Spectrum of electrons produced by multiphoton absorption of atom has been obtained with spatial Gauss and temporal Sech shape of the incident laser pulse. It is found that our model can explain many phenomena such as peak suppression and switching. In addition, what is more important is that we can explain the red shift of the peaks decreases to zero gradually, as the pulse width changes from short to long pulse regime.

Resonant ionisation by smooth laser pulses

D Rogus, Maciej Lewenstein

The authors discuss the multiphoton resonant ionisation of atoms by smooth laser pulses. A number of interesting coherent phenomena, such as multipeak splitting of the photoelectron spectrum are observed and studied for different laser detunings, pulse durations and AC Stark shifts.

Dynamics of multiphoton ionisation to multiple continua

Michele Crance, M Aymar

(n+p)-photon ionisation of atoms is studied when n-photon ionisation is energetically possible. A non-perturbative treatment is described. The corresponding results agree with the predictions of perturbative theory in the weak-field limit. The effect of the light pulse shape is discussed.
