Semiclassical Approximation of Multidimensional Bound States

Abstract

We extend WKB theory of bound states to all states of nonseparable systems derived from separable states by transformations that do not destroy the basic nodal structure of wavefunctions. We discuss the quantum and classical mechanics of semiclassical approximation and analyze the relation to other recent work.

WKB approximation for bound states by Heisenberg matrix mechanics

Abraham Klein

The WKB approximation for bound states is derived from Heisenberg matrix mechanics. It is shown that the result can be obtained from the Bohr–Sommerfeld quantization of a suitably chosen solution of the classical equations of motion. It is also derived from the commutation relation and from a quantum form of Hamilton’s variational principle.

Semiclassical calculation of bound states of a multidimensional system

Walter Eastes, R. A. Marcus

The semiclassical quantum conditions for bound states are studied for a nonseparable system of two coupled oscillators which possesses a collection of quasiperiodic trajectories. The semiclassical energy levels are found to be in excellent agreement with the exact quantum levels. This treatment differs from previous work in that periodic trajectories are not needed and in that the potential surface is smooth and nonseparable in all regions.

Path Integrals and Semiclassical Tunneling, Wavefunctions, and Energies

Karl F. Freed

The semiclassical limit of Feynman path integrals is investigated in order to determine those classical trajectories which contribute to tunneling processes. The semiclassical bound state energies, wavefunctions, and scattering phase shifts are directly recovered from the poles and residues of the semiclassical Green's function in energy space. Some extensions to cases of tunneling and bound states for multidimensional nonseparable potentials are discussed.

WKB wave functions for a nonseparable Hamiltonian

M. Fusco Girard

The extended WKB method recently presented is applied to the construction of a high-lying semiclassical wave function, corresponding to the quantum numbers (30,30), for the Barbanis Hamiltonian, a well-known two-dimensional nonseparable system; the results are compared with the semiclassical wave function obtained, for the same state, by Davis and Heller, by means of the coherent Gaussians method. The extended WKB method shows that the semiclassical wave function is the sum of four wave functions, differing on parts of the classically allowed region, each of these separately satisfying the Einstein–Brillouin–Keller quantization rules. The results presented here show that our method, which is the direct extension to integrable nonseparable Hamiltonians of the usual WKB scheme, is suitable for the semiclassical quantization of high-lying states also, and enables a closer investigation of the fine structures of the semiclassical wave functions.

Semiclassical eigenvalues for non-separable bound systems from classical trajectories: The degenerate case

Ken Stuart Sorbie, Nicholas Charles Handy

Semiclassical quantum conditions for arbitrary non-separable systems are derived. These lead to energy eigenvalues in good agreement with quantum results for both degenerate and non-degenerate two-dimensional (2D) systems. The applicability of these quantization rules is related to the structure of the caustics of the motion.
