Abstract

Optical self-induced transparency for extraordinary waves in anisotropic crystals is theoretically studied. Crystals in which dipole moments of impurity optically active atoms are arbitrarily oriented relative to the optic axis are analyzed in detail. Explicit analytic expressions for the parameters of nonlinear extraordinary wave are presented, which yield known results in limiting cases.

Optical transparency modes in anisotropic media

S. V. Sazonov, N. V. Ustinov

The modes of nonlinear propagation of the two-component electromagnetic pulses through optically uniaxial media containing resonant particles are studied. The features of their manifestation in the "dense" media and in the media with expressed positive and negative birefringences are discussed. It is shown that exponentially and rationally decreasing solutions of the system of material and wave equations allow us also to describe the propagation of the pulses of the self-induced transparency in isotropic media in the case, when the direct electric dipole-dipole interaction between the resonant particles is taken into account.

Self-induced transparency in an anisotropic molecular gas

V. I. Rupasov

A theory is developed of the self-induced transparency (SIT) of an anisotropic molecular gas for which aspects of the orientation of the molecules are of decisive importance. It is found that in such a chaotic molecular gas, the SIT equations do not have self-similar solutions in the form of a solitary nonlinear wave (soliton). In a partially oriented gas, the solutions have a quasisoliton form. An estimate is made of the orienting electric field required to observe the predicted effect.

Vector $0π$ pulse in anisotropic media

Guram T. Adamashvili

The system of equations of self-induced transparency (SIT) for extraordinary wave in uniaxial anisotropic media by means of generalized reduction perturbation method are transformed to the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. It is shown that in the theory of SIT the second derivatives have significant role and leads to the formation of a vector $0π$ pulse oscillating with the sum and difference of the frequencies. An explicit analytical expressions for the profile and parameters of the nonlinear wave are obtained. It is shown that along with scalar $2π$ pulse, the vector $0π$ pulse is also the basic pulse of SIT and the scalar $0π$ pulse of SIT is only an approximation which can be considered in some special cases. The conditions of the existence of the nonlinear extraordinary wave depends on the direction of propagation. The profile of the vector $0π$ pulse in anisotropic crystal of ruby is presented with characteristic parameters which usually met in experiments.

Self-induced medium transparency and nutation echo in an ensemble of impurities in photonic crystals

Ashat M. Basharov

Nutation oscillations of an electromagnetic wave propagating through photonic crystal with resonant impurities are studied theoretically in case when one energy level of impurity is in a gap in photonic states. It is shown that this impurity energy level serves as a trap for excitation of impurity atom when two-photon relaxation processes are essential in the electromagnetic field. This effect causes self-induced medium transparency and peculiar attenuation of nutation oscillation which allow studying experimentally two-photon relaxation.

Self-induced transparency and giant nonlinearity in doped photonic crystals

Gershon Kurizki, David Petrosyan, Tomáš Opatrný +2 more

Photonic crystals doped with resonant atoms allow for uniquely advantageous nonlinear modes of optical propagation. The first type of mode is self-induced transparency (SIT) solitons and multidimensional localized “bullets” propagating at photonic-bandgap frequencies. Such modes can exist even at ultraweak intensities (few photons) and therefore differ substantially either from solitons in Kerr-nonlinear photonic crystals or from SIT solitons in uniform media. The second type of mode is cross coupling between pulses exhibiting electromagnetically induced transparency and SIT gap solitons. We show that extremely strong correlations (giant cross-phase modulation) can be formed between the two pulses. These features may find applications in high-fidelity classical and quantum optical communications.
