Abstract

We investigate the quantum phases of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in an optical lattice based on the extended Bose-Hubbard model taking into account the three-body scattering. Accordingly, the phase diagrams from the superfluid state to the Mott-insulator state for such BEC systems are obtained and analyzed, employing both the mean-field approach and the functional-integral method. In particular, we explore the combined effects of three-body interaction and dipole-dipole interaction on the insulating lobes in detail. The experimental scenario is also discussed.

Mott-Hubbard transition of bosons in optical lattices with three-body interactions

Bo-Lun Chen, Xiaobin Huang, Su-Peng Kou +1 more

In this paper, the quantum phase transition between the superfluid state and the Mott-insulator state is studied based on an extended Bose-Hubbard model with two- and three-body on-site interactions. By employing the mean-field approximation we find the extension of the insulating ``lobes'' and the existence of a fixed point in three-dimensional phase space. We investigate the link between experimental parameters and theoretical variables. The possibility to observe our results through some experimental effects in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates is also discussed.

Quantum phase transition in a multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensate in optical lattices

Guang‐Hong Chen, Yong-Shi Wu

We present a general lattice model for a multicomponent atomic Bose-Einstein system in an optical lattice. Using the model, we analytically study the quantum phase transition between the Mott insulator and a superfluid. A mean-field theory is developed from the Mott-insulator ground state. When the interspecies interactions are strong enough, the Mott insulator demonstrates the phase separation behavior. For weak interspecies interactions, the multispecies system is miscible. Finally, the phase diagram is discussed with emphasis on the role of interspecies interactions. The tip and the shape of the Mott insulator lobes do not depend on the interspecies interactions, but the latter indeed modify the position of the phase boundaries.

Three-body on-site interactions in ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices and superlattices

Manpreet Singh, Arya Dhar, Tapan Mishra +2 more

The Mott-insulator--superfluid transition for ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice has been extensively studied in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model with two-body on-site interactions. In this paper, we analyze the additional effect of the three-body on-site interactions on this phase transition in an optical lattice and the transitions between the various phases that arise in an optical superlattice. Using the mean-field theory and the density matrix renormalization group method, we find the phase diagrams depicting the relationships between various physical quantities in an optical lattice and superlattice. We also propose a possible experimental signature to observe the on-site three-body interactions.

Quantum phases of constrained dipolar bosons in coupled one-dimensional optical lattices

Manpreet Singh, Suman Mondal, B. K. Sahoo +1 more

We investigate a system of two- and three-body constrained dipolar bosons in a pair of one-dimensional optical lattices coupled to each other by nonlocal dipole-dipole interactions. Assuming attractive dipole-dipole interactions, we obtain the ground-state phase diagram of the system by employing the cluster mean-field theory. The competition between the repulsive on-site and attractive nearest-neighbor interactions between the chains yields three kinds of superfluids, namely, the trimer superfluid, the pair superfluid, and the usual single-particle superfluid along with the insulating Mott phase at the commensurate density. Additionally, we realize the simultaneous existence of Mott insulator and superfluid phases for the two- and three-body constrained bosons, respectively. We also analyze the stability of these quantum phases in the presence of a harmonic trap potential.

Three-body interacting dipolar bosons and the fate of lattice supersolidity

Manpreet Singh, Tapan Mishra

We investigate a system of dipolar bosons in an optical lattice with local two- and three-body interactions. Using the mean-field-theory approach, we obtain the ground-state phase diagram of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with both repulsive and attractive three-body interactions. We show that the additional three-body on-site interaction has strong effects on the phase diagram, especially on the supersolid phase. Positive values of the three-body interaction lead to the enhancement of the gapped phases at densities larger than unity by reducing the supersolid region. However, a small attractive three-body interaction enhances the supersolid phase.

Superfluid–Mott-insulator transition of dipolar bosons in an optical lattice

Zhengwei Xie, Weixi Liu

The superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition of dipolar bosons in optical lattice is analyzed. By using the Bogoliubov approach and decoupling approximation, the energy spectrum and zero-temperature phase diagram of dipolar bosonic atoms in an optical lattice are obtained analytically. The results show that in these systems the superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition can be induced by tuning the dipole-dipole interaction and the position of the phase boundary can be moved when the on-site interaction is varied. Corresponding to a large on-site interaction, the dipole-dipole interaction is attractive near the critical point of the superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition.
