Abstract

A Monte Carlo method is used to study $N\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}N\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}N$ simple-cubic Ising lattices with periodic boundary conditions and free edges. For both types of boundary conditions the position of the specific-heat maximum varies for large $N$ as $a{N}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\lambda}}$, where $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ has the scaling value $\ensuremath{\lambda}={\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Both the thermal and magnetic properties are shown to obey finite-size scaling. The free-edge data are shown to be consistent with a surface contribution described by the scaling exponents ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}=\ensuremath{\alpha}+\ensuremath{\nu}$, ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{s}=\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\nu}$, ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{s}=\ensuremath{\gamma}+\ensuremath{\nu}$. Using the free-edge data we also consider corrections to scaling in the infinite lattice and discuss "rounding" in real systems in terms of surface contributions from grains.

Finite-size behavior of the Ising square lattice

David Paul Landau

An importance-sampling Monte Carlo method is used to study $N\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}N$ Ising square lattices with nearest-neighbor interactions and either free edges or periodic boundary conditions. The internal energy, specific heat, order parameter, susceptibility, and near-neighbor spin-spin correlation functions of the finite lattices are determined as a function of $N$ and extrapolated to the corresponding infinite-system values. The effect of finite size is greater for free edges in all cases. The results agree well with predictions of finite size scaling theory and the shape functions as well as amplitudes of surface contribution terms are determined.

Finite size behavior of the Ising square lattice with free edges

David Paul Landau

Using an importance sampling Monte Carlo technique we have studied NxN Ising square lattices with free edges for 3≲N≲60. Both the shift in ’’ordering temperature’’ Tc(N) as well as the broadening of the transition due to finite N are greater than for identical lattices with periodic boundary conditions (p.b.c). We find that 1−Tc(N)/Tc(∝) =a/N with a=1.24±0.04 and that (C/R)max?0.33 ln N +0.2. For N≳30 the specific heat begins to approach the same asymptotic size dependence as found for much smaller lattices with p.b.c. Similarly, the finite size dependence of the order parameter is much more dramatic for free edges than p.b.c. and the limiting behavior is not reached until N≳30.

Surface and bulk transitions in three-dimensional O(n) models

Youjin Deng, Henk W. J. Blöte, M. P. Nightingale

Using Monte Carlo methods and finite-size scaling, we investigate surface criticality in the $\mathrm{O}(n)$ models on the simple-cubic lattice with $n=1$, 2, and 3, i.e., the Ising, $XY$, and Heisenberg models. For the critical couplings we find ${K}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=2)=0.454\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}1659$ (10) and ${K}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=3)=0.693\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}003$ (2). We simulate the three models with open surfaces and determine the surface magnetic exponents at the ordinary transition to be ${y}_{h1}^{(\mathrm{o})}=0.7374\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}(15)$, 0.781 (2), and 0.813 (2) for $n=1$, 2, and 3, respectively. Then we vary the surface coupling ${K}_{1}$ and locate the so-called special transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=1)=0.502\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}14$ (8) and ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=2)=0.6222$ (3), where $\ensuremath{\kappa}={K}_{1}∕K\ensuremath{-}1$. The corresponding surface thermal and magnetic exponents are ${y}_{t1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=0.715$ (1) and ${y}_{h1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=1.636$ (1) for the Ising model, and ${y}_{t1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=0.608$ (4) and ${y}_{h1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=1.675$ (1) for the $XY$ model. Finite-size corrections with an exponent close to $\ensuremath{-}1∕2$ occur for both models. Also for the Heisenberg model we find substantial evidence for the existence of a special surface transition.

Bounded and inhomogeneous Ising models. II. Specific-heat scaling function for a strip

Helen Au-Yang, Michael Ellis Fisher

The specific heat, energy, and free energy of an infinitely long, square-lattice ferromagnetic Ising strip consisting of $n$ parallel layers with free boundary conditions and a surface magnetic field ${H}_{1}={k}_{B}{\mathrm{Th}}_{1}$ imposed on the last layer, is analyzed for large $n$ in the light of finite-size scaling theory. It is shown rigorously that the free energy (and, similarly, the energy and specific heat) can be written asymptotically in the scaling form $\ensuremath{\Delta}f(n,t,{h}_{1})\ensuremath{\approx}{n}^{\ensuremath{-}2}(\mathrm{ln}n){W}_{1}(nt,{n}^{\frac{1}{2}}{h}_{1})+{n}^{\ensuremath{-}2}{W}_{2}(nt,{n}^{\frac{1}{2}}{h}_{1})$, where $t=\frac{(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c})}{{T}_{c}}$. The scaling functions ${W}_{i}(x,y)$ are computed in explicit closed form and shown to verify all the analyticity and asymptotic requirements anticipated by scaling theory. Furthermore, in the limit $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ at fixed $t\ensuremath{\ne}0$, the bulk and surface contributions to the thermodynamic properties are found to account for all except a correction of order ${e}^{\frac{\mathrm{pna}}{\ensuremath{\xi}(T)}}$, where $a$ is the lattice spacing and $\ensuremath{\xi}(T)$ is the bulk correlation length; the value of the small rational constant $p$ is interpreted in terms of interference effects between the two opposite boundaries (or "surfaces").

Monte Carlo studies of the critical free energies for the three-dimensional Ising model with surfaces, edges, and corners

Pik-Yin Lai, K. K. Mon

We present an extensive Monte Carlo study of the three-dimensional Ising model with free surfaces, edges, and corners at bulk criticality. Finite-size scaling properties of the excess free energies of free surfaces, edges, and corners are estimated by use of the recently proposed applications of the parametric integration method. The corner excess free energies are obtained for the first time and are consistent with the logarithmic finite-size scaling predictions. Results of the simplecubic and body-centered-cubic lattices provide support for the proposed universality of the finite-size scaling amplitudes for the excess free energies of free surfaces, edges, and corners.

Monte Carlo studies of critical free energies and the simple-cubic Ising model

K. K. Mon

This paper addresses the limitation for routine applications of the proposed Monte Carlo method of direct calculation of absolute free energy by sampling of finite-size dependences and discusses new extensions. The need for multistage sampling is removed and the method is now simpler to apply in practice. To exhibit this, the critical free-energy density for the simple-cubic nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic Ising model is studied for a wide range of lattice sizes, up to 32\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}32\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}32. The finite-size scaling is demonstrated and the scaling amplitude calculated with higher accuracy than before. These results indicate the possibility that very accurate free-energy density and related quantities such as surface free energy, can be routinely obtained for lattice models from Monte Carlo simulations, even at criticality.
