Effects of interference among two-photon coherences on the population dynamics of a Four-level Λ system

A. S. Choe, Yongjoo Rhee, Jongmin Lee

We show that optimal detuning method describing population transfer passage in a three‐level system has an essential difference from the adiabatic following passage by counterintuititive sequence of two coherent laser pulses, by examining the dressed eigenstates and the Bloch vector precessing around a torque vector. In a four‐level Λ system, population dynamics is studied for the case where, on the optimal detuning condition, two‐photon coherences causing adiabtic transfer interfere each other. For a scheme of three degenerate levels, we show a possibility of complete population inversion by the optimal detuning method.

Adiabatic transition histories of population transfer in the Λ system

M. Elk

The superadiabatic basis scheme developed by Berry [Proc. R. Soc. London 429, 61 (1990)] is used to analyze adiabatic population transfer in the \ensuremath{\Lambda} system in what is known as the counterintuitive pulse scheme. For a specific choice of pulses, we find that the diabatic loss is given by the exponentially small (8-4\ensuremath{\surd}2)exp(-2/\ensuremath{\epsilon}), where \ensuremath{\epsilon} is a small parameter describing the adiabaticity of the process. We thus establish the connection between population transfer in the \ensuremath{\Lambda} system and general adiabatic transition theory. We project numerical solutions onto superadiabatic basis states for the real three-level system and show how the history of population transfer has a very compact and universal history in one particular superadiabatic basis.

Several methods of population transfer and comparisons of them

Chen Shou-chuan

It introduced several methods to transfer population, including two-level system and three-level system, and gave some comparisons on transfer efficiency and transfer velocity of them in theory. It is shown that population transfer by coherent pulse sequence is better than incoherence one. Numerical simulation results showed that when using Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Rapid Passage (STIRAP), in which the pump laser pulse fully overlaps the Stokes pulse with the Stokes preceding the pump, population can be transferred completely and rapidly. Robust control of population transfer among Zeeman sublevels in the ground states of three-level system is investigated using adiabatic rapid passage in theory. The laser pulse widths are supposed to be short compared to the lifetime of the excited level, which means adiabatic. We demonstrated that techniques of STIRAP can be found to optimize population transfer in the ground states of three-level Λ system.
