Abstract

For pt.I see ibid., vol.25, p.1745 (1992). In the first paper the authors studied certain crucial mathematical properties of Abelian Berry's phases in two quantum systems with supersymmetrically related Hamiltonians. They follow up such investigation by extending their analysis to nonAbelian Berry's phases in this present study. They present the derivation of an explicit expression for the difference in the relevant nonAbelian Berry's connections. Also they have derived an expression for a connection one form, which contain the non-Abelian Berry's connection, and which is invariant in the two supersymmetrically related quantum systems. To illustrate their findings mentioned above, they take the example of a Hamiltonian expressible in spin quadrupole. In this example, with a particular choice of supersymmetric partner, they show that the two Berry's connection one forms of the two supersymmetrically related systems may be related by gauge transformation.

Certain properties of Berry's phases in supersymmetric quantum mechanics

K M Cheng, P. C. W. Fung

The authors discuss certain properties of Berry's phases in two quantum systems with supersymmetrically related Hamiltonians and derive an explicit expression for the difference in their Berry's phases. Moreover, they obtain an expression for a topological quantity which can be interpreted in term of holonomy, and which contains the Berry's phase and is invariant in the two supersymmetrically related quantum systems. They take two examples to illustrate their findings. The first one is the example of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in which the Berry's phases of the two supersymmetrically related quantum systems are equal. The second example is a system with a spin-1/2 particle in a time varying magnetic field. They obtain the stated topological quantity and, in their analysis, they discover that this quantity is corresponding to the essential gauge transformation in such systems.

Berry phases for quadratic spin Hamiltonians taken from atomic and solid state physics: examples of Abelian gauge fields not connected to physical particles

Claude C. Bouchiat

This paper contains an evaluation of the Berry phases associated with the following class of nonlinear spin Hamiltonians : H (B, n ) = γS S · B + γQ((S · n) 2 - S2/3), with B · n = 0. Examples of these Hamiltonians are given in Atomic and Solid State Physics. We compute exactly the Berry phases for S = 1, 3/2 and for S > 3/2, to second order with respect to the ratio γQ/(γS B ). The results involve loop integrals of an Abelian gauge field which can be considered as a generalization of the magnetic monopole field, the projective complex plane P2(C) playing the role of the sphere S2. In the case of the spin-1 the relation between the Aharonov and Anandan cyclic quantum phase and the Berry adiabatic phase is made explicit. The connection between the semiclassical limit of the Berry phase and the classical adiabatic Hannay angle is analyzed using the classical spin model recently proposed by Nielsen and Rohrlich.

Berry's Phase in the Supersymmetric Ordinary Quantum and Paraquantum Mechanics: Two Simple Examples

N. Mebarki, M. H. Traikia, Mustapha Maamache +1 more

With a simple choice of the superpotential, two simple examples of supersymmetric ordinary quantum and paraquantum systems are studied and the related Berry's phases are obtained. Moreover, it is shown that for a specific value of the superpotential parameter, the supersymmetric ordinary quantum system is equivalent to a nonsupersymmetric paraquantum generalized harmonic oscillator.

Berry's phases for arbitrary spins nonlinearly coupled to external fields: application to the entanglement ofN> 2 non-correlated 1/2-spins

Marie-Anne Bouchiat, Claude C. Bouchiat

We derive the general formula giving Berry's phase for an arbitrary spin, having both magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole couplings with external time-dependent fields. We assume that the 'effective' electric and magnetic fields remain orthogonal during the quantum cycles. This mild restriction has many advantages. It provides simple symmetries leading to useful selection rules. Furthermore, the Hamiltonian parameter space coincides with the density matrix space for a spin S = 1. This implies a mathematical identity between Berry's phase and the Aharonov–Anandan phase, which is lost for S > 1. We have found that new physical features of Berry's phases emerge for integer spins ⩾2. We provide explicit numerical results of Berry's phases for S = 2, 3, 4. For any spin, one easily finds well-defined regions of the parameter space where instantaneous eigenstates remain widely separated. We have decided to stay within them and not deal with non-Abelian Berry's phases. We present a thorough and precise analysis of the non-adiabatic corrections with separate treatment for periodic and non-periodic Hamiltonian parameters. In both cases, the accuracy for satisfying the adiabatic approximation within a definite time interval is considerably improved if one chooses for the time derivatives of the parameters a time-dependence having a Blackman pulse shape. This has the effect of taming the non-adiabatic oscillation corrections which could be generated by a linear ramping. For realistic experimental conditions, the non-adibatic corrections can be kept below the 0.1% level. For a class of quantum cycles, involving as a sole periodic parameter the precession angle of the electric field around the magnetic field, the corrections odd upon the reversal of the associated rotation velocity can be canceled exactly if the quadrupole to dipole coupling is chosen appropriately ('magic values'). The even ones are eliminated by taking the difference of the Berry phases generated by two 'mirror' cycles. We end by indicating a possible application of the theoretical tools developed in this paper. We propose a way to perform a holonomic entanglement of N non-correlated 1/2-spins by performing adiabatic cycles governed by a Hamiltonian given as a nonlinear function of the total spin operator S , defined as the sum of the N individual spin operators. The basic idea behind this proposal is the mathematical fact that any non-correlated states can be expanded into eigenstates of S 2 and S z . The same eigenvalues appear several times in the decomposition when N > 2 but all these states differ by their symmetry properties under the N -spin permutations. The case N = 4 and S z = 1 is treated explicitly and a maximum entanglement is achieved.

Berry phase and supersymmetric topological index

Kirill Ilinski, Gleb Kalinin, V. V. Melezhik

The sequences of supersymmetry for a cyclic adiabatic evolution governed by the supersymmetric quantum mechanical Hamiltonian are revised. The condition (so-called supersymmetric adiabatic evolution condition) under which the supersymmetric reductions of Berry (nondegenerated case) or Wilczek–Zee (degenerated case) phases of superpartners are taking place is pointed out. The analog of the Witten index (supersymmetric Berry index) is determined. The final expression for the new index has compact form of indBH=sDet U≡Det Uτ, where U is the cyclic evolution operator generated by supersymmetric Hamiltonian H and τ is a supersymmetric involution. As the examples of the suggested concept of the supersymmetric adiabatic evolution the holomorphic quantum mechanics on a complex plane and meromorphic quantum mechanics on Riemann surfaces are considered. The supersymmetric Berry indices for the models are calculated.

The canonical connection in quantum mechanics

Péter Lévay, David McMullan, Izumi Tsutsui

In this paper we investigate the form of induced gauge fields that arises in two types of quantum systems. In the first we consider quantum mechanics on coset spaces G/H, and argue that G invariance is central to the emergence of the H connection as induced gauge fields in the different quantum sectors. We then demonstrate why the same connection, now giving rise to the non-Abelian generalization of Berry’s phase, can also be found in systems that have slow variables taking values in such a coset space.
