Energy spectrum and superfluidity of spin-2 ultracold bosons in optical lattices

Abstract

This paper studies the superfluidity of ultracold spin-2 Bose atoms with weak interactions in optical lattices by calculating the excitation energy spectrum using the Bogoliubov approach. The energy spectra exhibit the characteristics of the superfluid-phase explicitly and it finds the nonvanishing critical speeds of superfluid. The obtained results display that the critical speeds of superfluid are different for five spin components and can be controlled by adjusting the lattice parameters in experiments. Finally it discusses the feasibilities of implementing and measuring superfluid.

Superfluidity of spin-1 bosons in optical lattices

Rong Cheng, J.-Q. Liang

In this paper we show that the superfluidity of cold spin-1 Bose atoms of weak interactions in an optical lattice can be realized according to the excitation energy spectrum which is derived by means of Bogliubov transformation. The characteristic of the superfluid-phase spectrum is explained explicitly in terms of the nonvanishing critical velocity, i.e., the Landau criterion. It is observed that critical velocities of superfluid are different for three spin components and, moreover, can be controlled by adjusting the lattice parameters in practical experiments to detect the superfluid phase.

Energy Spectrum of Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

HANJiu-Rong, LIUJin-Ming, Jinghui +1 more

With the method of Green's function, we investigate the energy spectra of two-component ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices. We End that there are two energy bands for each component. The critical condition of the superfluid-Mott insulator phase transition is determined by the energy band structure. We also find that the nearest neighboring and on-site interactions fail to change the structure of energy bands, but shift the energy bands only. According to the conditions of the phase transitions, three stable superfluid and Mott insulating phases can be found by adjusting the experiment parameters. We also discuss the possibility of observing these new phases and their transitions in further experiments.

Excitation spectrum and phase separation of double Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

X. P. Liu

The excitation spectrum for symmetric two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BECs) in optical lattices is obtained, with emphasis on its quantitative dependence on intercomponent interaction parameter. The resulting two branches of the excitation spectrum have a linear spectrum asymptotically in the low momentum limit, which is expected as a behavior of superfluid. The critical superfluid velocity, depending on the intercomponent interaction parameter, is then obtained, which is quite different from the result obtained in other reference. A requirement of real excitation spectrum also results in a condition on the interaction parameters, which coincides with the phase separation condition. Hence in real spectrum excitation, it is proposed that there should be two branches of superfluid with different critical superfluid velocities, while in the complex spectrum it is predicted that there should be phase separation in the two-branch superfluid system. The excitation spectrum for an asymmetric two-component BEC system is also presented and analyzed.

Energy spectra of ultracold Bose–Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

Han Jiu-Rong, Yufan Wang, Weiqiang Liu

We show the energy band structure of ultracold atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices: two energy bands for bosonic atoms and a single band for fermionic atoms. The energy band structure can determine the superfluid Mott-insulator phase transition. We find the phase diagram of the mixture by means of path integral, and the phase transition depending on the experimental parameters. The possibility of observing these new phases and their transitions in future experiments is discussed.

Instabilities of bosonic spin currents in optical lattices

Hoi-Yin Hui, Ryan Barnett, Rajdeep Sensarma +1 more

We analyze the dynamical and energetic instabilities of spin currents in a system of two-component bosons in an optical lattice, with a particular focus on the N\'eel state. We consider both the weakly interacting superfluid and the strongly interacting Mott insulating limits as well as the regime near the superfluid-insulator transition and establish the criteria for the onset of these instabilities. We use Bogoliubov theory to treat the weakly interacting superfluid regime. Near the Mott transition, we calculate the stability phase diagram within a variational Gutzwiller wave-function approach. In the deep Mott limit we discuss the emergence of the Heisenberg model and calculate the stability diagram within this model. Though the Bogoliubov theory and the Heisenberg model (appropriate for the deep superfluid and the deep Mott-insulating phase, respectively) predict no dynamical instabilities, we find, interestingly, that between these two limiting cases there is a regime of dynamical instability. This result is relevant for the ongoing experimental efforts to realize a stable N\'eel-ordered state in multicomponent ultracold bosons.
