Abstract

We report on a high-intensity source of polarization-entangled photon pairs with high momentum definition. Type-II noncollinear phase matching in parametric down conversion produces true entanglement: No part of the wave function must be discarded, in contrast to previous schemes. With two-photon fringe visibilities in excess of 97%, we demonstrated a violation of Bell's inequality by over 100 standard deviations in less than 5 min. The new source allowed ready preparation of all four of the EPR-Bell states.

Efficient source of high purity polarization-entangled photon pairs in the 1550nm telecommunication band

Tae-Gon Noh, Heonoh Kim, Taehyoung Zyung +1 more

The authors present an efficient source of high purity polarization-entangled photon pairs in the standard 1550nm telecommunication band using a type-II degenerate parametric downconversion process. They first measured the spatial intensity distributions of the downconverted light to verify the beamlike, collinear, and noncollinear generations at the 1550nm wavelength. All four Bell states could easily be generated by selecting the intersection of two downconverted light cones in the noncollinear phase matching. They observed two-photon fringe visibilities of up to 98±3% and violations of Bell’s inequality by up to nine standard deviations when the accidental coincidences were subtracted.

Ultrabright source of polarization-entangled photons

Paul G. Kwiat, Edo Waks A, Andrew G. White +2 more

Using the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a two-crystal geometry, we have generated a source of polarization-entangled photon pairs that is more than ten times brighter, per unit of pump power, than previous sources, with another factor of 30 to 75 expected to be readily achievable. We have measured a high level of entanglement between photons emitted over a relatively large collection angle, and over a 10-nm bandwidth. As a demonstration of the source capabilities, we obtained a 242-\ensuremath{\sigma} violation of Bell's inequalities in less than three minutes, and observed near-perfect photon correlations when the collection efficiency was reduced. In addition, both the degree of entanglement and the state purity should be readily tunable.

Characterization of Entanglement Photons Generated by a Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion Pulse Source

Ekkasit Sakatok, Surasak Chiangga

Quantum computation and quantum communication require sources of entangled photons, especially from low-cost diode lasers. This study considered a polarization entangled photons pulse source produced via a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in the type-I phase-matching of two nonlinear crystals, incorporating a continuous wave laser diode operating in pulse mode as a pump. The generated photons were measured based on visibility as a function of the pump frequency and collection apertures. A polarization correlation between photon pairs of approximately 93% and a Bell parameter S value of 2.56 ± 0.05 were obtained using the source described here.

Conversion of transverse momentum correlation of photon pairs into polarization entanglement by using wavefront-splitting interference

Csaba Tamás Holló, Tamás Sarkadi, Máté Galambos +4 more

The transverse momentum correlation of photon pairs generated by noncollinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion with type-I phase matching is transformed into polarization entanglement. A robust wavefront-splitting interferometer scheme is used, due to which the phase of the entangled state does not require active stabilization. Frequency-degenerate signal and idler photons are separated and coupled into single-mode optical fibers. The concept is demonstrated in a compact and modular setup. A straightforward alignment process for producing any of the Bell states is presented. The entangled source has an output photon flux of $8.33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.27$ kcps/mW normalized to pump power (150 mW), and $17\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3%$ heralding ratio. The measured state fidelity with respect to the negative anticorrelated Bell state is $0.951\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.004$.

Experimental Observation of Four-Photon Entanglement from Parametric Down-Conversion

Manfred Eibl, Sascha Gaertner, Mohamed Bourennane +3 more

We observe polarization entanglement between four photons produced from a single down-conversion source. The nonclassical correlations between the measurement results violate a generalized Bell inequality for four qubits. The characteristic properties and its easy generation with high interferometric contrast make the observed four-photon state well suited for implementing advanced quantum communication schemes such as multiparty quantum key distribution, secret sharing, and telecloning.

A pulsed source of polarization-entangled photon pairs

Surasak Chiangga, Kitisak Boonkham

We report a Bell state preparation experiment using polarization-entangled photon pairs which are produced by spontaneous parametric down conversion of a 405 nm pulse laser beam inside two orthogonally oriented 0.1 mm beta-barium borate nonlinear crystals with Type-I phased matching. The degree and phase of all four Bell states are easily tunable. With two-photon interference visibilities in excess of 85%, we observe that the Bell parameter S for any of the four Bell states exceeds the classical limit in the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt form of Bell inequality by five standard deviations.
