Scheme for directly measuring the Wigner characteristic function via the driven Jaynes–Cummings model

Zheng Shi-Biao

A scheme is proposed for measuring the Wigner characteristic function of a cavity field. In the scheme an atom is sent through a slightly detuned cavity and driven by a strong resonant classical field. Then the population of the atom in the ground state directly yields the Wigner characteristic function of the cavity field.

Direct measurement of the Wigner distribution of a traveling field

Celso J. Villas-Bôas, Gilberto Aparecido Prataviera, M. H. Y. Moussa

We present a technique for direct measurement of the Wigner distribution function of a traveling field, based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a phase-sensitive element. In our scheme, the problem arising from the non-unity efficiency of the photodetectors is circumvented by the optical intensity of the input field for interferometry.

Scheme for direct measurement of the Wigner characteristic function in cavity QED

We propose a simple scheme for the reconstruction of the single-mode cavity field by considering the resonant atom-cavity interaction in the presence of a strong classical field. With the aid of the strong classical field, it is easy to realize the displacement operator for the cavity field correlated to the internal state of the atom. It is shown that the measurement of the population of the lower internal state directly yields the Wigner characteristic function of the cavity field.
