Abstract

Measurements of positronium (Ps) -formation cross sections (upper and lower limits) for positrons (1--17 eV) scattered by Rb atoms are reported. These measurements, along with recent measurements and calculations of total cross sections, provide evidence that coupling effects between Ps formation and other scattering channels may be very important for energies below 10 eV for Rb. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Study of positronium formation in positron - hydrogen molecule scattering

Priyanka Biswas, Arnab Ghosh

We investigate ground-state positronium formation cross sections in - scattering using simplified second-order perturbative Born series. The second-order angle-integrated capture cross sections are also found to be in very good agreement with the experimental results of Fromme et al and Diana et al in the energy region . Present second-order differential cross sections show a qualitative difference over the first-order results and agree well with the recent measurement of Tang and Surko at 80 and 100 eV.

Resonances in positronium-rubidium and positronium-cesium scattering

Sadhan K. Adhikari, São Paulo

Scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by cesium and rubidium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electronexchange model potential. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 5.057 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Rb system and at 5.067 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Cs system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.3 eV of width 0.4 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.4 eV in both systems. The pronounced P- and D-wave resonances in these systems lead to easily detectable local minima in the low-energy elastic cross sections. We also report results for elastic and Ps-excitation cross sections for Ps scattering by Rb and Cs. Positronium-atom scattering at low energies

I. I. Fabrikant, G. F. Gribakin

A pseudopotential for positronium-atom interaction, based on electron-atom and positron-atom phase shifts, is constructed, and the phase shifts for Ps-Kr and Ps-Ar scattering are calculated. This approach allows us to extend the Ps-atom cross sections, obtained previously in the impulse approximation [I. I. Fabrikant and G. F. Gribakin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 243201 (2014)], to energies below the Ps ionization threshold. Although experimental data are not available in this low-energy region, our results describe well the tendency of the measured cross sections to drop with decreasing velocity at $v<1$ a.u. Our results show that the effect of the Ps-atom van der Waals interaction is weak compared to the polarization interaction in electron-atom and positron-atom scattering. As a result, the Ps scattering length for both Ar and Kr is positive, and the Ramsauer-Townsend minimum is not observed for Ps scattering from these targets. This makes Ps scattering quite different from electron scattering in the low-energy region, in contrast to the intermediate energy range from the Ps ionization threshold up to $v\ensuremath{\sim}2$ a.u., where the two are similar.

Positronium formation and threshold behavior in positron-sodium collisions at low energies

Ning-Ning Gao, Hui-Li Han, Ting-Yun Shi

We investigate the elastic and inelastic scattering of positrons by sodium atoms in both the ground state, Na($3s$), and excited states, Na*($3p$, $4s$, $3d$), using the hyperspherical coordinate method with a model potential to represent the atomic core. The threshold behavior of positronium (Ps) formation cross sections is analyzed as the positron impact energy $E$ approaches zero. Within this framework, we derive a generalized expression for partial-wave Ps-formation cross sections at low positron energies, which applies to both ground-state and excited-state sodium targets. Our results confirm that the total threshold behavior follows the expected power-law dependence: \( σ_{\text{Ps}} \propto E^{-1/2} \) for exothermic reactions and \( σ_{\text{Ps}} \propto E^{a} \) for endothermic reactions, where \( a > 0 \). Furthermore, we find that Ps-formation cross sections for positron scattering from excited Na states are significantly larger than those from the ground state in the low-energy region. A notable enhancement of Gailitis-Damburg oscillations is observed above the Ps($n=2$) threshold, which may account for the increase observed in experimental data. Incorporating contributions from excited sodium targets improves agreement with experimental results and may help resolve discrepancies between theoretical predictions and measurements.

Positron scattering from noble gases future prospects

A. C. L. Jones, Peter Caradonna, Casten Makochekanwa +4 more

Recent results for positron scattering from noble gases over an energy range from 0.5 to 60eV are presented. Measurements include the grand total ( σ GT ), Ps formation ( σ Ps ) and Grand total – Ps formation ( (σ GT -P s ) cross sections. Some preliminary DCS results will also be presented. Work on a formulation of modified effective range theory (MERT) is being undertaken to determine the value of the scattering length [1] which may be useful for identifying a bound state. Plans for experiments on metal atoms will be outlined.

Formation of positron-atom bound states in collisions between Rydberg Ps and neutral atoms

A. R. Swann, D. B. Cassidy, Adam Deller +1 more

Predicted 20 years ago, positron binding to neutral atoms has not yet been observed experimentally. A scheme is proposed to detect positron-atom bound states by colliding Rydberg positronium (Ps) with neutral atoms. Estimates of the charge-transfer reaction cross section are obtained using the first Born approximation for a selection of neutral atom targets and a wide range of incident Ps energies and principal quantum numbers. We also estimate the corresponding Ps ionization cross section. The accuracy of the calculations is tested by comparison with earlier predictions for charge transfer in Ps collisions with hydrogen and antihydrogen. We describe an existing Rydberg Ps beam suitable for producing positron-atom bound states and estimate signal rates based on the calculated cross sections and realistic experimental parameters. We conclude that the proposed methodology is capable of producing such states and of testing theoretical predictions of their binding energies.
