Circular Dichroism of Atomic Transitions of the Rb D1 Line in Magnetic Fields

Armen D. Sargsyan, Emmanuel Klinger, Claude Leroy +2 more

Abstract The circular dichroism effect has been investigated for atomic transitions of the Rb D1 line in magnetic fields of up to 3 kG using circularly polarized σ+ and σ− radiation. The process of selective reflection from a 350-nm-thick nanocell has been used, which makes it possible to form narrow atomic lines and observe separately the behavior of individual transitions. Two groups consisting of six (85Rb atoms) and four (87Rb atoms) transitions are formed in magnetic fields B > 0.5 kG upon σ+ and σ− laser excitation. All transitions have been identified. It is shown that the strongest transitions for 87Rb and 85Rb atoms in magnetic fields of up to several kG are formed under σ− irradiation. A further increase in the magnetic field makes it possible to attain the Paschen–Back regime on a hyperfine structure, for which the probabilities of transitions upon σ+ and σ− excitation become identical. The theoretical model and experiment are in good agreement.

Observation of the hyperfine structure and anticrossings of hyperfine levels in the luminescence spectra of LiYF4:Ho3+

Kirill N. Boldyrev, Malkin Boris Zalmanovich, Marina N. Popova

Abstract Resolved hyperfine structure and narrow inhomogeneously broadened lines in the optical spectra of a rare-earth-doped crystal are favorable for the implementation of various sensors. Here, a well-resolved hyperfine structure in the photoluminescence spectra of LiYF 4 :Ho single crystals and the anticrossings of hyperfine levels in a magnetic field are demonstrated using a self-made setup based on a Bruker 125HR high-resolution Fourier spectrometer. This is the first observation of the resolved hyperfine structure and anticrossing hyperfine levels in the luminescence spectra of a crystal. The narrowest spectral linewidth is only 0.0022 cm −1 . This fact together with a large value of the magnetic g factor of several crystal-field states creates prerequisites for developing magnetic field sensors, which can be in demand in modern quantum information technology devices operating at low temperatures. Very small random lattice strains characterizing the quality of a crystal can be detected using anticrossing points.

Determination of the structure of hyperfine sublevels of Rb in strong magnetic fields by means of the coherent population trapping technique

Armen D. Sargsyan, R. Mirzoyan, T. A. Vartanyan +1 more

The splitting of hyperfine sublevels of the 85 Rb atom in strong magnetic fields has been studied by means of the coherent population trapping technique. Narrow resonances with a high signal-to-noise ratio have been detected in a 30-μm-thick spectroscopic cell. The magnetic field in the direction transverse to the laser beams has been created by permanent magnets and has reached 1600 G. Owing to the exclusive narrowness of the cell, the field in it is almost uniform. The break of the coupling between the electronic and nuclear moments, as well as the transition to the Paschen-Back regime in magnetic fields above 600 G, has been observed. The derivatives of the frequency shifts of the observed resonances and their asymptotic values in strong magnetic fields have been determined in terms of the magnetic field strength. The experimental results have been interpreted within a theoretical model based on the known constants of the hyperfine structure of the Rb atom.
