Abstract

We develop the Moyal formalism in the context of covariant wave equations, such as Dirac's or Proca's wave equations, using the Moyal formalism for the canonical or Wigner representation and the relation between covariant and canonical representations.

Wigner quantization of Hamilton-Dirac systems

Tudor Stefan Ratiu, Oleg Georgievich Smolyanov

This paper describes the states of quantum versions of finite dimensional Hamilton–Dirac systems in terms of (analogues of) the Wigner function (various definitions of Wigner functions for classical Hamiltonian systems can be found in [8]). We give a system of equations, which we call the Moyal–Dirac system, describing the evolution of this Wigner function. The passage from the Moyal equation describing the evolution of the quantum version of a classical Hamiltonian system to the Moyal–Dirac system describing the evolution of the quantum version of the corresponding Hamilton–Dirac system is similar to the passage from the Liouville equation describing the evolution of a classical Hamiltonian system to the Liouville–Dirac system of equations describing the evolution of the corresponding Hamilton–Dirac system. Thus, our Moyal–Dirac system is a generalization of both the Liouville–Dirac system and the Moyal equation

Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formulation of a Dirac quantized constrained system

Louis-Martinez, D

An extension of the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formulation of quantum mechanics suitable for a Dirac quantized constrained system is proposed. In this formulation, quantum observables are described by equivalent classes of Weyl symbols. The Weyl product of these equivalent classes is defined. The new Moyal bracket is shown to be compatible with the Dirac bracket for constrained systems.

The Phase Space Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

Marcos Mariño

This chapter presents Wigner’s approach to quantum mechanics, based on the Wigner function in phase space. It explains Wigner–Weyl quantization, which makes it possible to associate functions on phase space to wave functions and operators, and it develops the technology to do quantum mechanics in this formalism. This includes the star product, Moyal evolution, and star-eigenvalue equations. It also develops semiclassical methods in this formulation, and it has a section on Berry’s semiclassical formula for the Wigner function in one-dimensional systems.

Quantum Mechanics as a Classical Theory X: Quantization in Generalized Coordinates

L. S. F. Olavo

In this tenth paper of the series we aim at showing that our formalism, using the Wigner-Moyal Infinitesimal Transformation together with classical mechanics, endows us with the ways to quantize a system in any coordinate representation we wish. This result is necessary if one even think about making general relativistic extensions of the quantum formalism. Besides, physics shall not be dependent on the specific representation we use and this result is necessary to make quantum theory consistent and complete.

Quantum mechanics in phase space: the Schrodinger and the Moyal representations

Nuno Costa Dias, Maurice A. de Gosson, Franz Luef

We present a phase space formulation of quantum mechanics in the Schrödinger representation and derive the associated Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. We prove that the resulting theory is unitarily equivalent to the standard "configuration space" formulation and show that it allows for a uniform treatment of both pure and mixed quantum states. In the second part of the paper we determine the unitary transformation (and its infinitesimal generator) that maps the phase space Schrödinger representation into another (called Moyal) representation, where the wave function is the cross-Wigner function familiar from deformation quantization. Some features of this representation are studied, namely the associated pseudo-differential calculus and the main spectral and dynamical results. Finally, the relation with deformation quantization is discussed.

The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism for spin

Feifei Li, Carol Braun, Anupam Garg

The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism is developed for spin by means of a correspondence between spherical harmonics and spherical-harmonic tensor operators. The exact asymptotic relation among the P , Q , and Weyl symbols is found, and the analogue of the Moyal expansion is developed for the Weyl symbol of the product of two operators in terms of the symbols for the individual operators. It is shown that in the classical limit, the Weyl symbol for a commutator equals i times the Poisson bracket of the corresponding Weyl symbols.
