Universality of Quantum Critical Dynamics in a Planar Optical Parametric Oscillator

Abstract

We analyze the critical quantum fluctuations in a coherently driven planar optical parametric oscillator. We show that the presence of transverse modes combined with quantum fluctuations changes the behavior of the "quantum image" critical point. This zero-temperature nonequilibrium quantum system has the same universality class as a finite-temperature magnetic Lifshitz transition.

Critical fluctuations in an optical parametric oscillator: when light behaves like magnetism

K. Dechoum, L. Rosales-Zárate, P. D. Drummond

We study the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in a planar interferometer near threshold, where critical phenomena are expected. These phenomena are associated with nonequilibrium quantum dynamics that are known to lead to quadrature entanglement and squeezing in the oscillator field modes. We obtain a universal form for the equation describing this system, which allows a comparison with other phase transitions. We find that the unsqueezed quadratures of this system correspond to a two-dimensional XY-type model with a tricritical Lifshitz point. This leaves open the possibility of a controlled experimental investigation into this unusual class of statistical models. We evaluate the correlations of the unsqueezed quadrature using both an exact numerical simulation and a Gaussian approximation, and obtain an accurate numerical calculation of the non-Gaussian correlations.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Coherent Ising Machines: XY Model for Demonstration

Shuang-Quan Ma, Jing-Yi-Ran Jin, Qing Ai

In this work, we study the detection of quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in coherent Ising machines (CIMs) through a spectral mapping between the one-dimensional XY spin model and a network of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPOs). This exact correspondence reveals that the DOPO spectrum faithfully encodes the critical behavior of anisotropic and isotropic XY chains, while a strongly anisotropic regime provides a controlled near-transverse-field-Ising realization, with the energy gap closing precisely at the critical point. The ground-state energy density and its derivatives are analyzed, and the resulting singularities in magnetic susceptibility accurately pinpoint the quantum critical points of the corresponding spin model. These results show that CIMs not only serve as powerful platforms for solving combinatorial optimization problems but also provide a versatile tool for probing universal quantum critical phenomena, bridging quantum-spin models and photonic quantum systems.

Emergent phases and critical behavior in a non-Markovian open quantum system

Hil Fung Harry Cheung, Yogesh Sharad Patil, Mukund Vengalattore

Open quantum systems exhibit a range of novel out-of-equilibrium behavior due to the interplay between coherent quantum dynamics and dissipation. Of particular interest in these systems are driven, dissipative transitions, the emergence of dynamical phases with novel broken symmetries, and critical behavior that lies beyond the conventional paradigm of Landau-Ginzburg phenomenology. Here, we consider a parametrically driven two-mode system in the presence of non-Markovian system-reservoir interactions. We show that the non-Markovian dynamics modifies the phase diagram of this system, resulting in the emergence of a broken symmetry phase in a universality class that has no counterpart in the corresponding Markovian system. This emergent phase is accompanied by enhanced two-mode entanglement that remains robust at finite temperatures. Such reservoir-engineered dynamical phases can potentially shed light on universal aspects of dynamical phase transitions in a wide range of nonequilibrium systems, and aid in the development of techniques for the robust generation of entanglement and quantum correlations at finite temperatures with potential applications to quantum control, state preparation, and metrology.

Critical fluctuations and entanglement in the nondegenerate parametric oscillator

K. Dechoum, P. D. Drummond, S. Chaturvedi +1 more

We present a fully quantum mechanical treatment of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator both below and near threshold. This is a nonequilibrium quantum system with a critical point phase transition, that is also known to exhibit strong yet easily observed squeezing and quantum entanglement. Our treatment makes use of the positive $P$ representation and goes beyond the usual linearized theory. We compare our analytical results with numerical simulations and find excellent agreement. We also carry out a detailed comparison of our results with those obtained from stochastic electrodynamics, a theory obtained by truncating the equation of motion for the Wigner function, with a view to locating regions of agreement and disagreement between the two. We calculate commonly used measures of quantum behavior including entanglement, squeezing, and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlations as well as higher order tripartite correlations, and show how these are modified as the critical point is approached. These results are compared with those obtained using two degenerate parametric oscillators, and we find that in the near-critical region the nondegenerate oscillator has stronger EPR correlations. In general, the critical fluctuations represent an ultimate limit to the possible entanglement that can be achieved in a nondegenerate parametric oscillator.

Quantum Critical Regime in a Quadratically Driven Nonlinear Photonic Lattice

R. Rota, Fabrizio Minganti, Cristiano Ciuti +1 more

We study an array of coupled optical cavities in the presence of two-photon driving and dissipation. The system displays a critical behavior similar to that of a quantum Ising model at finite temperature. Using the corner-space renormalization method, we compute the steady-state properties of finite lattices of varying size, both in one and two dimensions. From a finite-size scaling of the average of the photon number parity, we highlight the emergence of a critical point in regimes of small dissipations, belonging to the quantum Ising universality class. For increasing photon loss rates, a departure from this universal behavior signals the onset of a quantum critical regime, where classical fluctuations induced by losses compete with long-range quantum correlations.
