Abstract

Using five-laser resonance excitation, we observe the p Rydberg series with n from 39 to 92. The energy levels calculated using the self-consistent-field method and quantum defect theory are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Dynamical contributions to the quantum defects of calcium

A. Ganesh Vaidyanathan, Philip Shorer

Nonadiabatic effects on the structure of Rydberg states of alkaline-earth atoms are examined and found to be large in many cases. Calculations for the quantum defects of the singlet $F$ and $G$ series in calcium, including dynamical contributions, are shown to be in good agreement with recent experimental data. This is in contrast to predictions based on the adiabatic core-polarization model, which significantly overestimates the quantum defects. Values for quantum defects of Ca for $l\ensuremath{\ge}4$ are presented.

Experimental study of Au atom Rydberg states

G. Ding, R. C. Shang, Lan Fen Chang +3 more

A beam of gold atoms was produced by heating the gold-containing material by an electro-thermal method. Two UV laser beams then irradiated the atomic beam perpendicularly, which excited the Au atoms to very high Rydberg states from their ground states (6S1/2). A high voltage pulsed electric field was then applied to the interaction region approximately 200 ns after the laser pulse, ionising the Au atoms in Rydberg states. By scanning the wavelength of the laser over a certain range, the positions of 38 energy levels of Au atoms in the n 2D3/2 (n=18-38) and n 2S1/2 (n=21-34, 36-38) series have been measured. The ionisation limits of the n 2D3/2 and n 2S1/2 series were determined by parametric fitting to be Ed=74 409.8 (3) cm-1 and Es=74 410.0 (2) cm-1, respectively. The quantum defects of all these levels were also calculated. This measurement is the first for Au in the energy range and channels mentioned above.

Ab InitioCalculations of Quantum-Defect Parameters for Alkaline Earths

K. C. Pandey, Sudhanshu Shekhar Jha, John A. Armstrong

Within the framework of the close-coupling method, ab initio calculations of parameters of multichannel quantum-defect theory have been carried out for several Rydberg series of Ca, Sr, and Ba. A local-density approximation, commonly used in solid-state calculations, including self-consistent, self-energy corrections, was made to the exchange-correlation potential. Good agreement with experimental values of multichannel quantum-defect theory parameters is obtained, permitting accurate prediction of highly excited-state binding energies.

Spectroscopy of Rydberg states in erbium using electromagnetically induced transparency

We present a study of the Rydberg spectrum in $^{166}\mathrm{Er}$ for series connected to the $4{f}^{12}(^{3}H_{6})6s$, ${J}_{c}=13/2$, and ${J}_{c}=11/2$ ionic core states using an all-optical detection based on electromagnetically induced transparency in an effusive atomic beam. Identifying approximately 550 individual states, we find good agreement with a multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) which allows assignment of most states to $ns$ or $nd$ Rydberg series. We provide an improved accuracy for the lowest two ionization thresholds to ${E}_{\mathrm{IP},{J}_{c}=13/2}=49260.750(1)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and ${E}_{\mathrm{IP},{J}_{c}=11/2}=49701.184(1)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ as well as the corresponding quantum defects for all observed series. We identify Rydberg states in five different isotopes, and states between the two lowest ionization thresholds. Our results open the way for future applications of Rydberg states for quantum simulation using erbium and exploiting its special open-shell structure.
