Storage and retrieval of light pulses in a fast-light medium via active Raman gain

Datang Xu, Zhengyang Bai, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to realize the storage and retrieval of light pulses in a fast-light medium via a mechanism of active Raman gain (ARG). The system under consideration is a four-level atomic gas interacting with three (pump, signal, and control) laser fields. We show that a stable propagation of signal light pulses with superluminal velocity (i.e., fast-light pulses) is possible in such a system through the ARG contributed by the pump field and the quantum interference effect induced by the control field. We further show that a robust storage and retrieval of light pulses in such a fast-light medium can be implemented by switching on and off the pump and the control fields simultaneously. The results reported here may have potential applications for light information processing and transmission using fast-light media.

Nonstationary theory of polarized light pulse propagation through a four-level resonant medium with allowance for nonlinear complex refractive index of medium

G. G. Adonts, Mikayel Arzakantsyan

Nonstationary theory of polarized light pulse propagation through the medium with resonant transition 1/2 -1/2 is developed with taking into account complexity of the medium nonlinear refractive index. The theory is developed based on the irreducible tensor formalism which allows diagonalizing relaxations matrix and introducing effective decay times associated with the population relaxation, as well as relaxation of coherence between magnetic sublevels of the resonant system. It is shown that as a result of interference of magnetic sublevels in the polarized radiation field the inversionless amplification of radiation occurs due to optical pumping process. The dependence of inversionless amplification on the line broadening and resonance detuning is studied.

Slow light amplification in a non-inverted gain medium

Filippo Caruso, I. Herrera, Saverio Bartalini +1 more

We investigate the propagation of a coherent probe light pulse through a three-level atomic medium (in the Λ-configuration) in the presence of a pump laser under the conditions for gain without inversion. When the carrier frequency of the probe pulse and the pump laser are in a Raman configuration, we show that it is possible to amplify a slow propagating pulse. We also analyze the regime in which the probe pulse is slightly detuned from resonance where we observe anomalous light propagation.
