Density of states for a structurally disordered Hubbard model

Abstract

We study the density of states for a structurally random Hubbard model with a half-filled band. Calculations are carried out with the hopping integral t(R) obtained from a hydrogenic 1S wave function and with an on-site Coulomb repulsion [Formula: see text]. The equation of motion for the retarded single-particle Green's function is treated in the Hubbard III decoupling approximation. The configurational averaging for the Green's function is simplified using the approximation of Kikuchi. Coefficients in the locator–interactor expansion are calculated analytically up to seventh order in t. Several approximants for this formal series are investigated, including Padé approximant, continued fraction approximation, and quadratic Padé approximant. The last two approximants yield densities of state in satisfactory agreement with the result of Aoki and Kamimura in the high concentration region and our results are expected to represent an improvement for intermediate densities. However, for very low densities the Hubbard III scheme will underestimate the effect of spin correlations and our previous treatment in the U = ∞ limit would be more appropriate for the lower Hubbard band.

Properties of the half-filled Hubbard model investigated by the strong coupling diagram technique

A. Sherman

The equation for the electron Green's function of the fermionic Hubbard model, derived using the strong coupling diagram technique, is solved self-consistently for the near-neighbor form of the kinetic energy and for half-filling. In this case the Mott transition occurs at the Hubbard repulsion Uc ≈ 6.96t, where t is the hopping constant. The calculated spectral functions, density of states (DOS) and momentum distribution are compared with results of Monte Carlo simulations. A satisfactory agreement was found for U > Uc and for temperatures, at which magnetic ordering and spin correlations are suppressed. For U < Uc and lower temperatures the theory describes qualitatively correctly the positions and widths of spectral continua, variations of spectral shapes and occupation numbers with changing wave vector and repulsion. The locations of spectral maxima turn out to be close to the positions of δ-function peaks in the Hubbard-I approximation.

Half-filled Hubbard model at low temperature

M Takahashi

The ground-state energy E and momentum distribution n k of the electrons are expanded from the atomic limit for the half-filled Hubbard model. The coefficients of expansion are represented by the spin correlation functions of the spin 1 / 2 Heisenberg model. Using the spin-wave theory, approximate values of coefficients are calculated for the square lattice and the simple cubic lattice. In one dimension, the theory shows a good agreement with the exact solution. An effective spin Hamiltonian for the half-filled Hubbard model with arbitrary hopping integrals is obtained up to the fifth order. It is shown that the fourth term contains four spin interactions.

Ground state of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model

N. I. Chashchin

We investigate the ground state (T = 0 K) of the one-dimensional symmetrical (n = 1) Hubbard model formalized in terms of the system of integral equations, which we previously obtained using the method of the generating functional of Green’s functions with the subsequent Legendre transformation. In a wide range of variations in the parameter of Coulomb interaction U, the following characteristics of the system have been calculated: the electron density of states, the electron band spectrum, the number of doubly occupied lattice sites, the localized magnetic moment, the correlator of the square of the longitudinal component of spin at a site,<S Z 2>, and the internal energy of the system. It has been shown that, for all U > 0, the model yields two solutions, i.e., an antiferromagnetic insulator and a paramagnetic insulator, in which there are no single-electron quasi-particles at the Fermi level. The energy of the paramagnetic solution in the region of U < 1.1 is considerably less than that of the antiferromagnetic solution for the case of U > 1.1, we have the opposite situation.

Single-particle dispersion and density of states of the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model

Gabe Schumm, Shiwei Zhang, Anders W. Sandvik

Implementing an improved method for analytic continuation and working with imaginary-time correlation functions computed using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we resolve the single-particle dispersion relation and the density of states (DOS) of the two-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling. At intermediate interactions of $U/t=4,6$, we find quadratic dispersion around the gap minimum at wave vectors $\mathbf{k}=(\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2)$ (the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}$ points). We find saddle points at $\mathbf{k}=(\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi},0),(0,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi})$ (the $X$ points), where the dispersion is approximately quartic, leading to a sharp DOS maximum above the almost flat ledge arising from the states close to $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}$. The fraction of quasiparticle states within the ledge is ${n}_{\mathrm{ledge}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.15$. Upon doping away from half filling, within the rigid-band approximation, these results support Fermi pockets around the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}$ points, with states around the $X$ points becoming filled only at doping fractions $x\ensuremath{\ge}{n}_{\mathrm{ledge}}$. The high density of states away from the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}$ gap edge may be an important clue for a finite minimum doping level for superconductivity and other instabilities of doped Mott insulators.

The electrical conductivity of an amorphous Hubbard model

K. L. Liu

We study the frequency-dependent electrical conductivity of a structurally disordered single-band Hubbard model near half-filling and in the strong-correlation limit. The electronic transfer integral is assumed to have a quasi-exponential form as used in the impurity-band problem of doped semiconductors. The short-time expansion of the current correlation function is calculated diagrammatically to the second order in the inverse temperature β and up to the seventh order in electronic hopping. Based on this expansion an approximate current correlation function is constructed. By means of the Kubo formula, the configurational average of the electrical conductivity is then calculated to order β2 for various atomic densities. The validity of the high-temperature expansion is examined. We also study the effect of spin polarization on the absorption line shape and the dc resistivity at different temperatures.

A THEORY OF FERROMAGNETISM IN THE HUBBARD MODEL WITH INFINITE COULOMB INTERACTION

Yu. A. Izyumov, B. M. Letfulov, E. V. Shipitsyn +1 more

On the basis of a regular perturbation theory in the form of diagrammatic technique with X-operators, a ferromagnetic state in the Hubbard model with infinite on-site Coulomb interaction U is studied for a wide range of electron concentration n. Treating the kinetic energy of electrons as perturbation, we get the exact graphic representations for three Green’s functions [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for electrons with spin ↑ and ↓ (spontaneous magnetic moment is in ↑ direction) and [Formula: see text] for spin waves. All of them are expressed through the unique system of four-point and three-point vertex parts for effective electron-magnon and electron-electron interactions. These vertex parts are calculated in two approximations: a low-density approximation for n≪1 or nh=1–n≫1, and the generalized random-phase approximation (GRPA), which was suggested earlier by us for the description of paramagnetic phase in this model. An important result in both cases is the understanding of essential difference of electron states with spin ↑ and ↓. The state for ↑ has coherent character in all region of electron concentration (n>nc) where a ferromagnetic state exists, while the state for spin ↓ has mixed characters including both coherent and incoherent contribution. For the saturated ferromagnetism (n>ns) when nh≪1, [Formula: see text] is an entirely incoherent (nonquasiparticle) state. Appearance of incoherent state is probably a general property of strongly correlated systems distinguishing its behavior from the Fermi liquid. We show also that the Hubbard-I approximation has no region of applicability for the electron with spin ↓ in a ferromagnet and we found a new factor describing the correlation-narrowing of ↓ spin electron band. Green’s function [Formula: see text] calculated in two different limits n≪1 and nh≪1, are jointed together to allow us to calculate ns which lies in the intermediate concentration regime. For simple cubic lattice we found ns=0.87. In the limit nh≪1 our results reduce to the earlier known ones, including Nagaoka’s result for the spin wave energy. We point out the way to construct a rigorous theory for ferromagnetic state in the intermediate range of electron concentration. In the conclusion several important problems are discussed in connection to the continuation of the present work.
