Abstract

We apply the relativistic configuration-interaction valence-bond method to calculate various characteristics of the alkali-metal RbCs dimer. These include the electronic potentials and transition dipole moments between the ground and first excited states and permanent dipole moments of the X 1sigma+ and a 3sigma+ states of the ground configuration. In addition, we estimate the lifetime of the rovibrational levels of the X state due to blackbody radiation. These data can help experimentalists to optimize photoassociative formation of ultracold RbCs molecules and their longevity in a trap or in an optical lattice. Extended basis sets, constructed from Dirac-Fock and Sturm's orbitals, have been used to ensure convergence of our calculations. We compare our data with other theoretical and experimental results when they were available.

Theoretical evaluation of the radiative lifetimes of LiCs and NaCs in the A1Σ+ state

Nabil Mabrouk, Hamid Berriche

Calculations of the adiabatic potential energy curves and the transition dipole moments between the ground (A 1 Σ + ) and the first excited (A 1 Σ + ) states have been determined for the LiCs and NaCs molecules. The calculations are performed using an ab initio approach based on non-empirical pseudopotentials for Cs + , Li + and Na + cores, parameterized l -dependent polarization potentials and full configuration interaction calculations. The potential energy curves and the transition dipole moment are used to estimate the radiative lifetimes of the vibrational levels of the A + Σ + state using the Franck–Condon (FC) approximation and the approximate sum rule method. The radiative lifetimes associated with the A + Σ + state are presented here for the first time. These data can help experimentalists to optimize photoassociative formation of ultracold molecules and their longevity in a trap or in an optical lattice.

Ab-initio study of the ground and low-lying excited states including the spin-orbit effect of RbBa molecule and laser cooling feasibility

Hela Ladjimi, Wissem Zrafi, Abdul-Rahman Allouche +1 more

In this work, we present a thorough theoretical structure and spectroscopic study of the ground and low lying excited states of RbBa molecule. High-level ab-initio calculations are performed, using MCSCF/MRCI+Q level of method, based on the effective core potential (ECP) and core-polarization potential (CPP) approach. The potential energy curves, spectroscopic parameters, vibrationnel energy levels of the 16( 2,4 Σ + , 2,4 Π, 2,4 Δ) first electronic states, with respect to the lowest five dissociation limits were calculated. The comparison of the spectroscopic constants of the ground state X 2 Σ + with the available theoretical work, are in good agreement. The study of all the excited states is performed in this work for the first time. Afterwards, the spin-orbit operator is incorporated in valence MRCI calculation using optimized relativistic spin-orbit pseudo-potentials and 33 Ω states are generated and split into Λ-S states. In addition, both relativistic and non relativistic calculations of permanent and transition dipole moments are presented and discussed. Stimulated black body ( T = 300 K) and spontaneous transition rates of vibrational states of X 2 Σ + state were evaluated. The related vibrational lifetimes for RbBa are found to be in order of 10 3 s which is sufficiently large for ultracold experiments. Moreover, the vibrational life-time for the A 2 Σ + ( v’ ) and A 2 П ( v” ) states are measured and the possibility of Laser Cooling for the RbBa molecule is discussed based on Franck–Condon factors calculation of A 2 Σ + ( v’ )→ X 2 Σ + ( v ) and A 2 П( v” ) → X 2 Σ + ( v ) transition. This work represents a significant contribution for experimentalists as it provides efficient information in order to form cold alkali and alkaline-earth RbBa molecules.

Ab initiocalculation of the KRb dipole moments

Svetlana Kotochigova, Paul S. Julienne, Eite Tiesinga

The relativistic configuration interaction valence-bond method has been used to calculate permanent and transition electric dipole moments of the KRb heteronuclear molecule as a function of internuclear separation. The permanent dipole moment of the ground-state $X{}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ potential is found to be 0.30(2) ${\mathrm{ea}}_{0}$ at the equilibrium internuclear separation with excess negative charge on the potassium atom. For the $a{}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ potential the dipole moment is an order of smaller magnitude (1 ${\mathrm{ea}}_{0}=8.47835{10}^{\ensuremath{-}30}\mathrm{Cm}).$ In addition, we calculate transition dipole moments between the two ground-state and excited-state potentials that dissociate to the $\mathrm{K}(4s)+\mathrm{Rb}(5p)$ limits. Using this data we propose a way to produce singlet $X{}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ KRb molecules by a two-photon Raman process starting from an ultracold mixture of doubly spin-polarized ground state K and Rb atoms. This Raman process is only allowed due to relativistic spin-orbit couplings and the absence of gerade-ungerade selection rules in heteronuclear dimers.

Structure, formation, and interactions of ultracold polar molecules

Johannes Deiglmayr

In this thesis properties of ultracold alkali dimers are studied both theoretically and experimentally. In the first, theoretical, part, the prospects for the formation of ultracold LiCs dimers in deeply bound vibrational levels using photoassociation (PA) are investigated. Furthermore a previous systematic investigation of the structure of all alkali dimers is extended by the ab initio calculation of static dipole polarizabilities. An extensive comparison with other published results supports the reliability of the chosen method. Based on these results an experimental scheme for the creation of an sample of oriented ultracold dipolar molecules is developed. In the second, experimental part the formation of LiCs ground state molecules by PA is investigated. PA spectroscopy is used to improve the accuracy of the potential energy curve for the B1P and the value of the dissociation energy of the X1S+ state significantly. The rovibrational distribution of ground state molecules is probed in a combination of resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization and depletion spectroscopy. A simple scheme is found to form ultracold polar LiCs molecules in the absolute ground state X1S+,v''=0,J''=0. In a quasi-electrostatic trap created by a CO2 laser, LiCs molecules are formed and stored. A lifetime of 24(3)s, limited by collisions with background gas, is observed and rate coefficients for inelastic collisions between LiCs in high vibrational states and Cs atoms are determined. The long storage time facilitates the observation of radiative decay of polar molecules towards lower vibrational levels.

Ground State Properties of the Polar Alkali-Metal–Ytterbium and Alkaline-Earth-Metal–Ytterbium Molecules: A Comparative Study

Qinqin Shao, Lijuan Deng, Xiaodong Xing +3 more

The accurate knowledge of electronic properties is important for creating and manufacturing ultracold molecules. We report here the ab initio quantum chemistry calculations on the properties of alkali-metal-ytterbium AM-Yb (AM = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and alkaline-earth-metal-ytterbium AEM-Yb (AEM = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) molecules for their electronic ground state. The potential energy curves (PECs) and permanent dipole moments (PDMs) are calculated on the basis of the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) level of theory, where the core-valence correlations and scalar relativistic effects are included. The related spectroscopic constants are also determined. The results demonstrate that the dissociation energies and PDMs of AEM-Yb are smaller than those of AM-Yb molecules, and an interesting trend of the dissociation energy has been observed. This work provides favorable information for the experimental study of forming ultracold molecules via photoassociation technique.

Four-Component Relativistic Coupled Cluster and Configuration Interaction Calculations on the Ground and Excited States of the RbYb Molecule

Lasse Kragh Sørensen, Stefan Knecht, Timo Fleig +1 more

We present high-level four-component coupled cluster and multireference configuration interaction calculations of potential energy curves, dipole moment, Franck-Condon factors and spectroscopic constants of the newly formed RbYb molecule. From finite-field calculations we obtain an electric dipole moment for RbYb of almost 1 D. In combination with its magnetic dipole moment this makes RbYb an excellent candidate for trapping and for studying dipolar interaction in the ultracold regime. Significant Franck-Condon factors are found between the rovibronic ground state and the lowest rovibrational levels of the first excited 2Sigma1/2+ state but also between a broad range of rovibrational levels of the 2Pi1/2 and 2Pi3/2 states. This allows for several two-step approaches to reach the rovibronic ground state after initial photoassociation.
