Abstract

A new mechanism of memory cell formation on structural biological units of the α-helical protein molecules is suggested in this work. The role of Frenkel excitons and "Davydov splitting" in the resonance mechanism of external excitation energy transmission along peptide groups is defined. Using the Green function method was obtained the theoretical bases of the protein cell absorptive power formation under external laser irradiation. The polarization peculiarities of α - protein exciton excitations at such levels of pumping, which allow to obtain a complex outlet signal reaction, were studied. Protein molecules can serve as perspective material for observing the effect of optical bistability. The results of the performed investigations permit to develop one of the lines of the molecular engineering technologies - the creation of molecular memory devices by controlling the laser radiation of the outlet protein molecule.

The peculiarities of polarization bistability, realized in polarization-sensitive materials

Claudia Yu. Zenkova, Ірина Василівна Солтис

The paper proposes for consideration an alternative method of creating systems for processing and preserving information on the basis of molecular crystals using the phenomenon of optical bistability. Polarization-dependent nonlinear absorption of the benzene type molecular crystals is responsible for the complex dynamics of exciton processes in the analyzed molecular crystal. It is shown that the multilevel signal realized at the outlet is controlled by the outside effecting factors as well as by the inside effecting factors.

Role of nonlinear exciton interactions in obtaining optical bistability

Bohdan M. Nitsovich, Claudia Yu. Zenkova, S. G. Kharinovich

This paper proposes for consideration an additional mechanism for influencing the exciton absorption spectra and observing temperature redistribution peculiarities of the crystal absorptive power. They are caused by nonlinear phonon-exciton interactions, which are due to anharmonic effects in the exciton-phonon system. The arising of the borderline frequency, which possesses the smallest region of optical bistability realization, is caused by a break in the direction of the absorption curve. At low temperatures the basic role is played by the exciton-exciton interaction, and at high temperatures nonlinear exciton-exciton-phonon processes play the most important role the value of the borderline frequency is defined by the size and sign of the nonlinear exciton-exciton-phonon function as well as by the crystal temperature and the exciton density, which is created by the external powerful laser wave.

Exciton self-trapping in molecular media with an elastic dipole moment

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

Exciton self-trapping in a molecular medium is considered within a self-consistent model taking into account the change in the dipole moment as a result of a displacement of molecules and the resonance interaction with an electromagnetic field. New mechanisms and specific features of the formation of localized structures in quasi-one-dimensional molecular structures are investigated. It is shown that the dependence of the dipole moment on molecular vibrations leads to new conditions for exciton self-trapping and intrinsic optical bistability, as well as for the formation of electromagnetically induced transparency. The theory proposed is used to explain the specific features of exciton self-trapping in a conjugated polymer and J aggregates of dyes under the action of an external laser field.

Magnetooptical absorption of a molecular crystal in the exciton frequency range

Oleksandr V. Derevyanchuk, K. Yu. Zenkova, Valeriy M. Kramar +1 more

Nonlinear absorption of a molecular crystal in an external magnetic field is considered. The exciton absorption shape functions under polarized laser radiation and a weak magnetic field, as well as the mechanisms responsible for the formation of a hysteresis loop in the dependence of the output light intensity on the applied magnetic field, were studied for the particular case of benzene. It was established that, for the magnetooptical response of the molecular crystal under study, the formation of bistable loops is inverse in character, which makes it possible to monitor and control the behavior of bistable elements in optical logics systems with an external magnetic field at a fixed illumination frequency.

Theory of optical bistability in the region of exciton resonances

Bohdan M. Nitsovich, C. Y. Zenkova

An exciton-phonon mechanism for producing cavityless optical bistability is suggested. We consider the influence of the oscillating subsystem of a crystal on the absorption process of a laser wave in the region of exciton frequencies. It is shown that exciton-phonon interaction leads to nonlinear dependence of the absorption coefficient on the density of the exciton gas. The increase of absorption with increasing exciton density, however, is possible only in the frequency region on the long-wavelength tail of the exiton band. As a result, the exciton density of the crystal becomes a hysteresis function of external parameters (intensity of the incident wave, temperature, etc.). We calculate the absorption coefficient of excitons and define the frequency and temperature regions where optical bistability may exist. We analyze different relaxation mechanisms of excitons and explain the experimental results of observing optical bistability in different semiconductor crystals.

Magneto-optical bistability of Frenkel excitons

Oleksandr V. Derevyanchuk, Claudia Yu. Zenkova, Valeriy M. Kramar +2 more

The effect of a magnetic field on the development of the nonlinear absorption in organic semiconductors and on the formation of the hysteresis loop in the incoming-outgoing light intensity dependence has been investigated. The form function of the exciton absorption is calculated, taking into account three factors: the heavy exciton density, the polarization of the excitation wave and the weak magnetic field. It is shown that an appropriate change of these values allows one to form a hysteresis loop, and thus to form optical bistability (OB) with preset parameters.
