On the residual entropy of the one-dimensional Ising chain with competing interactions

Abstract

The authors establish explicit relations between the residual entropy of the one-dimensional Ising chain with a nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic and kth-neighbour antiferromagnetic interaction, and the residual entropies of the one-dimensional Ising chain with many-neighboured antiferromagnetic interactions in the corresponding maximum critical fields. The obtained results are, in particular, relevant to the chains that appear in the axial next-nearest-neighbour ising model.

Ground state degeneracy of the Ising antiferromagnets in the maximum critical field

Dragan Slavkov Hajdukovic, S. Milošević

The authors demonstrate that all Ising antiferromagnets with arbitrary many-neighboured interactions and in the maximum critical field, have highly degenerate ground states accompanied with non-zero residual entropies. The residual entropies vanish when the range of interaction tends to infinity. The proof is realised by an explicit calculation in the case of a one-dimensional many-neighboured Ising antiferromagnet, and by establishing bounds for the residual entropy in the case of an Ising system situated on a lattice with arbitrary number of dimensions. They also show that the established bounds may serve as estimates of frequently unknown actual values of the residual entropy.

Free energy, entropy, and magnetization of a one-dimensional Ising model of a diluted magnet

S. V. Semkin, Виктор Павлович Смагин

We consider a one-dimensional Ising model (chain) with the the nearest-neighbor interaction and with a random nonmagnetic dilution. We find the exact free energy of such a chain as a function of the impurity concentration, temperature, and the external magnetic field. In the case of antiferromagnetic interaction in the chain, we find the specific magnetization, the mean value of the product of neighboring spins, and the entropy as functions of these parameters. We study the residual system entropy.

Ensemble inequivalence in Ising chains with competing interactions

Alessandro Campa, Vahan Hovhannisyan, Stefano Ruffo +1 more

Abstract We study the effect of competing interactions on ensemble inequivalence. We consider a one-dimensional Ising model with ferromagnetic mean-field interactions and short-range nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-NN couplings which can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. Despite the relative simplicity of the model, our calculations in the microcanonical ensemble reveal a rich phase diagram. The comparison with the corresponding phase diagram in the canonical ensemble shows the presence of phase transition points and lines which are different in the two ensembles. As an example, in a region of the phase diagram where the canonical ensemble shows a critical point and a critical end point, the microcanonical ensemble has an additional critical point and also a triple point. The regions of ensemble inequivalence typically occur at lower temperatures and at larger absolute values of the competing couplings. The presence of two free parameters in the model allows us to obtain a fourth-order critical point, which can be fully characterized by deriving its Landau normal form.

Investigation of size effects on the physical properties of one-dimensional Ising models in nanosystems

Farid Taherkhani, Ebrahim Daryaei, Gholamabbas Parsafar +1 more

Ising models in nanosystems are studied in the presence of a magnetic field. For a one-dimensional (1-D) array of spins interacting via nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour interactions we calculate the heat capacity, the surface energy, the finite-size free energy and the bulk free energy per site. The heat capacity versus temperature exhibits a common wide peak for systems of any size. A small peak also appears at lower temperatures for small arrays when the ratio of magnetic field spin interaction energy over the nearest-neighbour spin–spin interaction energy, f, is within . The peak becomes smaller for longer array and eventually vanishes for long arrays, disappearing when the number of spins, N, is greater than 25 when only nearest-neighbour interactions are taken into account, and more than 14 when next-nearest-neighbour interactions are included as well. Ising models in which the nearest-neighbour interactions are ferromagnetic, while the next-nearest-neighbour interactions are either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, are compared, and it is found that the reduced free energy in the former case exhibits a larger deviation from the bulk value.

Two-dimensional axial third-nearest-neighbor Ising model and theS=1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain

Marcelo D. Grynberg, Horacio Ceva

We consider an axial Ising model with competing interactions up to third neighbors within a low-temperature approximation in terms of interacting and nonreversing domain walls. Assuming small third-neighbor coupling, we find a close relation between the transfer matrix of this classical model and the Hamiltonian of an S=1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain in a uniform magnetic field. This connection allows us to obtain the phase boundaries of the ferromagnetic and other low-temperature modulated states. The ground-state energy for arbitrary magnetization values of the Heisenberg chain is shown to provide information about the density of walls or wave number. In contrast with the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model, this quantity displays plateaus and reentrant behavior for some relations among the coupling constants. An alternative way to evaluate correlation functions in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is presented.

One-dimensional ising model with next-nearest-neighbour interaction in magnetic field

F. A, Kassan-ogly

The exact solution for the one-dimensional Ising model with nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour interactions in an external magnetic field is obtained within the framework of the Kramers-Wannier transfer matrix. The explicit analytical expressions for thermodynamic quantities such as magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat are derived and analyzed at length as functions of temperature, magnetic field, and the signs and values of the interaction parameters.
