Critical behaviour of the fully packed loop model on the square lattice

Abstract

We investigate the critical behaviour of the fully packed O(n) loop model on the square lattice in which each vertex is visited once by a loop. A transfer-matrix analysis shows that this model can be interpreted as a superposition of a low-temperature O(n) model and an solid-on-solid (SOS) model, as for the fully packed model on the honeycomb lattice. However, not all of the critical exponents are the same for both lattices. In contrast, the fully packed model on the triangular lattice appears to behave as a pure low-temperature O(n) model.

Fully packed loop model on the honeycomb lattice

Henk W. J. Blöte, Bernard Nienhuis

We investigate the O(n) model on the honeycomb lattice, using its loop representation in the limit of full packing. The universal properties, which we calculate by means of finite-size scaling and transfer-matrix techniques, are different from the branches of O(n) critical behavior known thus far. The conformal anomaly of the model varies between -1 and 2 in the interval 0\ensuremath{\le}n\ensuremath{\le}2. The universality class of the model is characterized as a superposition of a low-temperature O(n) phase, and a solid-on-solid model at a temperature independent of n.

On the universality of fully packed loop models

Jesper Lykke Jacobsen

Fully packed loop (FPL) models on the square and the honeycomb lattice constitute new classes of critical behaviour, distinct from those of the low-temperature O( n ) model. A simple symmetry argument suggests that such compact phases are only possible when the underlying lattice is bipartite. Motivated by the hope of identifying further compact universality classes we therefore study the FPL model on the square-octagon lattice. Surprisingly, this model is only critical for loop weights n <1.88, and its scaling limit coincides with the dense phase of the O( n ) model. For n = 2 it is exactly equivalent to the self-dual 9-state Potts model. These analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical transfer matrix results. Our conclusions extend to a large class of bipartite decorated lattices.

Critical behaviour and conformal anomaly of the O(n) model on the square lattice

Henk W. J. Blöte, Bernard Nienhuis

Finite-size scaling and transfer-matrix techniques are used to determine the conformal anomaly and critical exponents of O(n) models on the square lattice. These calculations were performed on five branches of critical points parametrised by n. The results for two of the branches agree with the known universal properties of the O(n) model as derived for the honeycomb lattice. Finite-size convergence is poor for most of the third branch, so that in this case the classification in terms of known models is uncertain. The authors' data show that the fourth branch can be interpreted in terms of a combination of a low-temperature O(n) and a critical Ising model. Finally, the numerical results for the O(n) model on the remaining branch agree accurately with the known results for the low-temperature O(n+1) model. They prove this equivalence by means of an exact mapping.

Finite average lengths in critical loop models

Jesper Lykke Jacobsen, J. Vannimenus

A relation between the average length of loops and their free energy is obtained for a variety of O( n )-type models on two-dimensional lattices, by extending to finite temperatures a calculation due to Kast. We show that the (number) averaged loop length stays finite for all non-zero fugacities n , and in particular it does not diverge upon entering the critical regime ( n 2 + ). Fully packed loop (FPL) models with n = 2 seem to obey the simple relation = 3 L min , where L min is the smallest loop length allowed by the underlying lattice. We demonstrate this analytically for the FPL model on the honeycomb lattice and for the 4-state Potts model on the square lattice, and based on numerical estimates obtained from a transfer matrix method we conjecture that this is also true for the two-flavour FPL model on the square lattice. We present, in addition, numerical results for the average loop length on the three critical branches (compact, dense and dilute) of the O( n ) model on the honeycomb lattice, and discuss the limit n 0. Contact is made with the predictions for the distribution of loop lengths obtained by conformal invariance methods.

Classical fully packed loop model with attractive interactions on the square lattice

Bhupen Dabholkar, Xiaoxue Ran, Junchen Rong +4 more

We study a classical model of fully packed loops on the square lattice, which interact through attractive loop segment interactions between opposite sides of plaquettes. This study is motivated by effective models of interacting quantum matter arising in frustrated magnets or Rydberg atom arrays, for which loop degrees of freedom appear at low energy. Through the combination of Monte Carlo simulations and of an effective height field theory, we find that the critical point known to occur at infinite temperature gives rise to a high-temperature critical phase with floating exponents. At lower temperature, the system transitions via a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition to a nematic phase where lattice rotation symmetry is broken. We discuss consequences for the phase diagram of the quantum loop model on the same lattice.

The completely packed O(n) loop model on the square lattice

Henk W. J. Blöte, Yougang Wang, Wenan Guo

We present an investigation of the completely packed O(n) loop model on the square lattice by means of the transfer-matrix method and finite-size scaling. We investigate the model for a number of n values covering a wide range. This model is known to be equivalent with the q-state Potts model with q = n 2 , but here we also investigate the range n 2, the system is in an ordered phase, where the majority of the loops cover part of the elementary faces of the lattice in one of two checkerboard patterns that are in phase coexistence. Furthermore, we find that the numerical results for the free energy density are in agreement with the expressions obtained from the exact analysis of the equivalent six-vertex model.
