Quantum Zeno effect and V-scheme lasing without inversion

Abstract

We show that the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) plays an essential role in discussions of lasing without inversion (LWI) in a V-level scheme. We investigate this role using Monte Carlo wave-function simulations, which provide insight into the physical origin of inversionless lasing. The QZE appears as a result of spontaneous emission and the corresponding collapse of the wave function. Whereas the usual explanation of LWI in terms of quantum interference requires coherence, the QZE explains why incoherent processes are also needed.

Manifestation of Quantum Interference in Lasing Without Inversion

Hwang Lee, Marian O. Scully

Abstract In terms of quantum interference we demonstrate the physical mechanisms which lead to light amplification without population inversion. The similarities and differences between the two model schemes, namely, A and V-type, are emphasized. A coherent radiation field, on one hand, which drives one of the lasing levels, yields the quantum mechanical two paths via Autler-Townes splittings. On the other hand, the spontaneous emission in this driving transition plays a key role in the asymmetries between the absorption and the stimulated emission in the lasing transition.

Effects of spontaneously generated coherence on the conditions for exhibiting lasing without inversion in a V system

Yanfeng Bai, Hong Mei Guo, Hui Sun +3 more

In this paper, we investigate the effects of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on the conditions for exhibiting lasing without inversion (LWI) in the presence of a weak probe and a strong-coupling field. We find that owing to the effect of SGC, LWI can be realized without the incoherent pumping or the decay between two upper levels. However, in the region where LWI can be exhibited, the effect of SGC term on the exhibition of LWI is not always positive, sometimes it can even cumber the realization of LWI for some values of SGC. These values are given in this paper. In addition, we also analyze the essence of the generation of the probe field.

Lasing with and without inversion due to spontaneously generated coherence in an open V-type system

李景娟, 刘呈普, 崔妮 +2 more

It is shown that in an open V-type atomic system without incoherent pumping, the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) can not only lead to lasing with inversion but also lead to lasing without inversion (LWI) including at resonance of the driving and probe fields. This conclusion is much different from that obtained in the corresponding closed V-type system.

Self-pulsing lasing without inversion in the double- scheme

R. Corbalán, J. Mompart, Ramon A. Vilaseca +1 more

Lasing without inversion (LWI) is investigated from a nonlinear dynamics point of view for an atomic system with three coupled J = 0-1 transitions. The driving and generated fields couple two of these transitions defining a double- scheme. In addition, two incoherent pump fields are acting on the system. We find that LWI can occur not only in a continuous wave regime but also in a self-pulsing regime. A clear physical interpretation of the origin of this self-pulsing LWI is given. We obtain analytically the threshold driving field intensity needed to achieve both continuous wave and self-pulsing LWI emission. For large enough cavity losses, the system can reach either continuous wave or self-pulsing regimes by only changing the driving field intensity.

Effects of spontaneously generated coherence on lasing without inversion in a ladder-type three-level atomic system

Cen Jing-sheng

An investigation into lasing without inversion in a Ladder-type three-level atomic system was conducted. With the exhibiting condition of lasing without inversion, the effects of the incoherent pumping and spontaneously generated coherence(SGC) have been studied in detail. The investigation shows that SGC can decrease the phenomena of lasing without inversion(LWI).However, the incoherent pumping can strengthen it.
