Abstract

An experimental investigation was made of the optical absorption spectra corresponding to transitions in the Pr 3+ ion in crystalline LaF 3 and Y 2 SiO 5 matrices. The investigation was carried out in the temperature range 5 — 80 K. An anomalous redistribution of the intensity was observed in the absorption spectrum of a Pr 3+ :LaF 3 crystal. This redistribution did not agree with the hypothesis of the Boltzmann population of the states in discrete multilevel systems.

An experimental investigation was made of the optical absorption spectra corresponding to transitions in the Pr3+ ion in crystalline LaF3 matrices. The investigation was carried out in the temperature range 5 divided by 80 K. An anomalous redistribution of the intensity was observed in the absorption spectrum of a Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. This redistribution did not agree with the hypothesis of the Boltzman population of the states in discrete multilevel systems.

Investigation of interaction of optical centers Pr 3+ in a Y 2 SiO 5 :Pr 3+ crystal

N. V. Znamensky, Evgenii A Petrenko, T. G. Yukina +2 more

In a Y2SiO5:Pr3+ crystal characterized by two non-equivalent Pr3+ optical centers, the interaction mechanisms between Pr3+ ions as well as between Pr3+ ions and a crystal lattice have been studied. It has been shown that along with the electron-phonon interaction, the interaction between Pr3+ ions and two-level systems made an additional contribution to the homogeneous linewidth of the 3H4↔3P0 optical transition. Two different mechanisms of the Pr3+ interionic coupling have been found. The first mechanism is associated with a dipole-dipole interaction between non-equivalent Pr3+ optical centers, while the other one is governed by a cooperative cross relaxation of the excitation energy among the same type Pr3+ optical centers.

Optical superradiance in a Pr3+:LaF3crystal

Optical superradiance was experimentally obtained for the first time on the 3 P 0 — 3 H 4 (0) transition in a Van Vleck paramagnet — a Pr 3+ :LaF 3 crystal. Superradiance at a wavelength of 477.7 nm was emitted by a sample 8 mm long, with resonant absorption coefficient α=4.7 cm -1 , excited by 10-ns laser pulses at a temperature of 2.2 K.

New channels of photon echo relaxation in Y2SiO5:Pr3+ and LaF3:Pr3+ crystals

Yu. V. Malyukin

Experimental results on the investigation of low-temperature optical absorption spectra and temperature dependence of the photon echo (PE) amplitude signal in Y2SiO5:Pr3+ and LaF3:Pr3+ crystals at the transition H43(0)−3P0 of the Pr3+ ion are presented. It is shown that additional relaxation channels exist for PE in addition to the known phonon mechanisms. This is associated in a LaF3:Pr3+ crystal with the temperature variation of dipole moment at the Pr3+ ion transition. In a Y2SiO5:Pr3+ crystal, this is due to the thermally activated transitions for the Pr3+ ion between nonequivalent positions in the crystal lattice.

Nonlinear-optical absorption through photon avalanche

A. W. Kueny, William E. Case, Mark E. Koch

Anomalous and strong optical absorption occurs in Pr-doped LaCl3 crystals for laser pump light connecting excited electronic states of the Pr ion and intensity in excess of a well-defined threshold value. We have measured the absorption as a function of pumping intensity and compare the results with mathematical models of a laser-induced excited-state population.

Anomalous dephasing of optical transitions of a Pr3+ ion in Y2SiO5 crystal

Yu. V. Malyukin, N. L. Pogrebnyak, V. P. Seminozhenko

The temperature drops in the photon echo intensity have been studied for the first time in the low-symmetry impurity crystal Y2SiO5:Pr3+ in the temperature range 4.2–20 K on the resonance transitions 3P0–3H4 and 1D2–3H4 of the Pr3+ ion. It is shown that the obtained results can be interpreted by using the familiar mechanisms of dephasing of optical transitions in impurity ions.
