Observation of quantum interference between dressed states in an electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

We report on an experimental observation of quantum interference between two dressed states created by a coherent pumping laser in an electromagnetically induced transparency. In a \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type three-level atomic system in rubidium vapor, we reduce the Rabi frequency of the pumping laser in one arm down below the spontaneous decay rate of the common excited state and still observe a narrow dip with subnatural linewidth in the absorption curve of a probe beam in another arm. This clearly demonstrates that the absorption reduction at the low pumping intensity is mainly due to the interference between the two dressed states, not due to the ac--Stark-shift effect.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a three-level Λ-type system in rubidium atoms

Yongqing Li, Min Xiao

An electromagnetically induced transparency is observed at one arm of a three-level \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type system in a rubidium D1 line (794.8 nm) with an 85% reduction in absorption, when a pumping field is present at the other arm. This reduction in absorption for the weak probe field is due to the atomic coherence produced by the strong pumping field. This experiment is done in a Rb vapor cell at room temperature with cw diode lasers for both pumping and probe beams in a Doppler-free configuration. A simple theoretical treatment including Doppler broadening is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental measurement.

Effect of spontaneously generated coherence on absorption in a V-type system: Investigation in dressed states

Chun-Liang Wang, Zhi‐Hui Kang, Si-Cong Tian +2 more

We investigate the spectrum of a four-level V-type system. We show that spontaneously generated coherence between the two closely spaced excited levels produces interference effects in the absorption. As a result, more transparency windows appear comparing to the normal three-level V system. We can also control the number of the transparency windows to be two or three just by tuning the Rabi frequency of the coupling field. We present an equivalent system without the rigorous requirement of close-lying levels to observe the phenomena. We also experimentally demonstrate the corresponding features in a rubidium atomic beam.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Gain under The Effect of Tuned Coupling Field

李晓莉 Li Xiaoli, 张连水 Zhang Lianshui, 杨悦 Yang Yue +1 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) with extremely narrow spectral width is obtained in a well-studied lambda three level system where a coupling field and a probing field interact with two optical transitions.By tuning coupling field,it excites the transitions between two ground state hyperfine levels and excited state level. In this paper, both EIT and spontaneous radiation induced coherent dip can be obtained, and even the gain is observed to superpose to the EIT window.By discussing the behaviors of probing field absorption profiles under the effect of the tuned coupling field,it can be seen that there are quantum interference and coherence between EIT and spontaneous radiation induced coherent dip,and the coherence becomes remarkable when the excitation frequency of the coupling field satisfies certain conditions.

Nonlinear excitation by quantum interference in a Doppler-broadened rubidium atomic system

Neil Mulchan, D. G. Ducreay, Rodolfo Pina +2 more

We analyze nonlinear excitation in a four-level atomic system that exhibits electromagnetically induced transparency induced by a strong coupling laser. We show that, at the line center of the atomic transition, the nondegenerate two-photon excitation in the dressed states can be enhanced by constructive quantum interference in two excitation paths while the linear absorption is inhibited by destructive quantum interference. We report an experimental study of the interference-enhanced two-photon absorption in a multilevel Λ-type rubidium atomic system and compare the measurements with the theoretical calculations.

Coherent laser spectroscopy of rubidium atoms

S. Mitra, Md. Mabud Hossain, Biswajit Ray +3 more

Laser spectroscopy experiments are reported on rubidium atoms by using two or three external cavity diode lasers to study multiple resonance transitions in Λ- and V-type systems as well as on (Λ+V)-type system. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) peaks having sub-natural line-widths are found on the Doppler broadened transmission backgrounds with velocity selective enhanced absorption dips. In the presence of a pump laser, probe spectrum shows enhancement of EIT signal by tuning the control laser frequency when the Λ- and V-type EIT signals are made to overlap. Theoretical analysis is carried out by solving the optical Bloch equations for five-level atomic model under Λ configuration. With the numerically simulated spectra, variation of EIT transmission peak with ground state decay rate and excited state spontaneous decay rate are investigated. Effect of pump Rabi frequency on the transmission peak is also shown.

Observation of the quantum interference phenomenon induced by interacting dark resonances

Ying-Cheng Chen, Yean-an Liao, Hsin‐Ying Chiu +2 more

We report an experimental observation of narrow and high-contrast spectra, which are induced by interacting dark resonances and have been predicted in Phys. Rev. A 60, 3225 (1999). Spectra are measured with cold ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms produced by a magneto-optical trap. In this experimental system, a coupling laser and a weak probe laser form a three-level \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT); a microwave drives a magnetic-dipole transition between the fourth level and the ground state that is coupled with the excited state by the coupling laser. The observed spectral profile of probe absorption exhibits a very sharp peak emerging inside a narrow EIT dip. Such spectral feature provides more opportunities in manipulating atomic-optical response.
