Abstract

Localization properties of general quantum systems and their connection with causality are studied, extending previous results by the first-named author.Received 3 March 1979DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.22.377©1980 American Physical Society

Spreading Wave Packets—A Cautionary Note

Barry R. Holstein, Arthur R. Swift

The spreading of a quantum mechanical wave packet is studied from two apparently equivalent points of view. For certain classes of wave functions, one prescription predicts spreading while the other does not. Reasons for this anomaly are discussed.

Quantum effect of electromagnetic potentials on an internal degree of freedom

Yakir Aharonov, M. Vardi

We describe a new experimental arrangement in which the so-called quantum effect of potentials (known also as the Aharonov-Bohm effect) is "recorded" on an internal degree of freedom.Received 20 February 1979DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.20.3213©1979 American Physical Society

On the Localizability of Quantum Mechanical Systems

Arthur S. Wightman

From the very beginning of quantum mechanics, the notion of the position of a particle has been much discussed. In the nonrelativistic case, the proof of the equivalence of matrix and wave mechanics, the discovery of the uncertainty relations, and the development of the statistical interpretation of the theory led to an understanding which, within the inevitable limitations of the nonrelativistic theory, may be regarded as completely satisfactory.

Phase shift in a rotating neutron or optical interferometer

Max Dresden, Chen Ning Yang

The phase shift caused by rotating a neutron or optical interferometer is derived as the Doppler effect due to the moving source and moving reflecting crystals.Received 12 June 1979DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.20.1846©1979 American Physical Society

Causality Is an Effect, II

Lawrence S. Schulman

Causality follows the thermodynamic arrow of time, where the latter is defined by the direction of entropy increase. After a brief review of an earlier version of this article, rooted in classical mechanics, we give a quantum generalization of the results. The quantum proofs are limited to a gas of Gaussian wave packets.
