Bose-Einstein Condensates in Time Dependent Traps

Yvan Castin, Ralph Dum

We present analytical results for the macroscopic wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a time dependent harmonic potential. The evolution of the spatial density is a dilatation, characterized by three scaling factors which allow a classical interpretation of the dynamics. This approach is an efficient tool for the analysis of recent experimental results on the expansion and collective excitation of a condensate.

Vortex Formation in Dilute Inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein Condensates

We solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii in 2D to simulate the flow of an object through a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a harmonic well. We demonstrate vortex formation and study the process in terms of the accumulation of phase slip and the evolution of the fluid velocity.

Exact Hydrodynamics of a Trapped Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate

Duncan H J O’Dell, S. Giovanazzi, Claudia Eberlein

We present exact results in the Thomas-Fermi regime for the statics and dynamics of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate that has dipole-dipole interactions in addition to the usual s-wave contact interactions. Remarkably, despite the nonlocal and anisotropic nature of the dipolar interactions, the density profile in a general time-dependent harmonic trap is an inverted parabola. The evolution of the condensate radii is governed by local, ordinary differential equations, and as an example we calculate the monopole and quadrupole shape oscillation frequencies.
