Cold neutron confinement by an electromagnetic classical field

Abstract

We determine the (bound) ground state of a neutron with anomalous magnetic moment in a given Aharonov–Casher configuration. We recast the description of the system in a supersymmetric form. Then the basic physical requirements for unbroken supersymmetry are established. We comment on the possibility of neutron confinement in this system.

The ground state of a spin-(1/2) neutral particle with anomalous magnetic moment in an Aharonov-Casher configuration

We determine the (bound) ground state of a spin-(1/2) chargeless particle with anomalous magnetic moment in certain Aharonov-Casher configurations. We recast the description of the system in a supersymmetric form. Then the basic physical requirements for unbroken supersymmetry are established. We comment on the possibility of neutron trapping in these systems.

Comments on cold neutron confinement by an electromagnetic classical field

Stanley A. Bruce

Regarding a recent paper (Bruce S 2006 Phys. Scr. 74 371), we comment on cold neutron confining in a system consisting of an Aharonov–Casher together with a properly set Aharonov–Bohm configuration. We find that, for the supersymmetric ground state, an extra spin–orbit (spin-electromagnetic angular momentum density) term should be present. This effect turns out to modify the phenomenology associated with the anomalous magnetic moment of the neutron.

Neutron interaction with electromagnetic fields: a didactic approach

Stanley A. Bruce, Joaquín F. Díaz-Valdés

Abstract In physics, consideration of phenomena in one or two space dimensions (1 + 1 or 2 + 1 space-time dimensions) is often regarded as a useful step toward understanding them in three space dimensions (3 + 1 space-time dimensions). This article presents the basic dynamics of a neutron with a magnetic moment in the presence of certain electromagnetic fields in 2 + 1 space-time dimensions by using a polar coordinate system. We illustrate this approach with two simple instances within the theory of the Dirac equation: (i) a (neutron) harmonic oscillator, and (ii) a particular kind of hydrogen atom-like system; wherein the Aharonov–Casher discrete states are exemplified within the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics.

Comment on ‘‘Proposed Aharonov-Casher effect: Another example of an Aharonov-Bohm effect arising from a classical lag’’

A classical model of a neutron as a current loop is examined. The importance of the mechanical structure (which was overlooked by Boyer) for the dynamical equations is elaborated. It is shown that the current loop has the same behavior in an external static electric field as was obtained for the neutron by Aharonov and Casher from the Dirac equation.
