Abstract

We have observed the cooling of ultracold neutrons during their long storage in a trap, with a probability estimated as 1×10 −6 /reflection and with an energy transfer of about 3 neV.

A new escape channel for ultracold neutrons in traps

Peter W. Geltenbort, Валерий Викторович Несвижевский, D. G. Kartashov +9 more

A surprising new escape channel for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in traps was reported recently. It could be relevant to the long-standing puzzle of the “too high” loss rate of UCNs from traps, which has yet to be completely understood and eliminated. In the present work we positively identify the new phenomenon and investigate it in detail. The escape of UCNs from traps is due to rare events in which their energy undergoes a small increase (∼10 −7 eV). The reason for such an energy gain and its impact on the physics of UCN storage is still to be investigated.

Spin-flip loss in magnetic traps for ultracold neutrons

A. Steyerl, E. Gutsmiedl

A particle with spin and magnetic-dipole moment can be trapped in certain suitable magnetic-field configurations only as long as its spin remains aligned with the field direction as it moves through the trap. Here, we extend earlier analyses of spin-flip probabilities, which lead to storage loss for ultracold neutrons, and present arguments indicating that some of the earlier results should be multiplied by a factor of two.

Heating ultracold neutrons by acoustic oscillations of the trap walls

А. С. Герасимов, V. K. Ignatovich, M.V. Kazarnovskii

The heating of ultracold neutrons by acoustic oscillation of the trap walls is theoretically examined. The probability of changing the neutron energy during collisions with oscillating walls are calculated classically and quantum mechanically. Kinetic equations describing the dependence on residence of the total number of neutrons in the trap are derived and solved. (tr-auth)
