An effective-field theory that has recently been used for studying higher-spin Ising models is herein extended to the transverse Ising model with an arbitrary spin S. The general formulation for evaluating the transition line in the \ensuremath{\Omega}-T space and relevant statistical-mechanical quantities is derived. Numerical results are performed and analyzed for the particular cases S=3/2 and S=2.

Auxiliary-field Monte Carlo for quantum spin and boson systems

M. Ulmke, Richard T. Scalettar

We describe an algorithm for the numerical simulation of quantum spin and boson systems. The method is based on the Trotter decomposition in imaginary time and a decoupling by auxiliary Ising spins. It can be applied, in principle, to arbitrary (random) spin systems, however, in general it suffers from the ``minus-sign problem.'' This problem is absent in the case of the Ising model in a transverse field in arbitrary dimensions and geometries. We show test results for the spin-1/2 $\mathrm{XY}$ model, the one-dimensional transverse Ising model with disorder, and the phase transition induced by a transverse field in the two-dimensional Ising model.

The transverse Ising system with arbitrary spin

Yu‐qiang Ma, Chang-De Gong

Transverse Ising models with arbitrary spin S are studied by use of the pair approximation with the discretized path-integral representation. The equation for the phase diagram is derived for an arbitrary number of nearest-neighbour spins z and critical lines are obtained numerically for a few values of the spin. It is easy to show that in the limit z to infinity the results for the infinite-range interaction model can be derived within the present formulation.
