Polarization squeezing and nonclassical properties of light

Abstract

We formulate polarization uncertainty relations and polarization squeezing criteria in a SU(2) invariant manner. In this formulation the SU(2) coherent states are the only minimum uncertainty states. We show that polarization squeezing is a nonclassical property. We analyze the relation between polarization squeezing and other nonclassical properties such as entanglement and quadrature squeezing.

Multimode squeezing, biphotons and uncertainty relations in polarization quantum optics

V. P. Karassiov

The concept of squeezing and uncertainty relations are discussed for multimode quantum light with the consideration of polarization. Using the polarization gauge SU(2) invariance of free electromagnetic fields, we separate the polarization and biphoton degrees of freedom from other ones, and consider uncertainty relations characterizing polarization and biphoton observables. As a consequence, we obtain a new classification of states of unpolarized (and partially polarized) light within quantum optics. We also discuss briefly some interrelations of our analysis with experiments connected with solving some fundamental problems of physics.

Nonclassicality versus entanglement in a noncommutative space

Sanjib Dey, Andreas Fring, Véronique Hussin

Nonclassicality is an interesting property of light having applications in many different contexts of quantum optics, quantum information and computation. Nonclassical states produce substantial amount of reduced noise in optical communications. Furthermore, they often behave as sources of entangled quantum states, which are the most elementary requirement for quantum teleportation. We study various nonclassical properties of coherent states and Schrödinger cat states in a setting of noncommutative space resulting from the generalized uncertainty relation, first, in a complete analytical fashion and, later, by computing their entanglement entropies, which in turn provide supporting arguments behind our analytical results. By using standard theoretical frameworks, they are shown to produce considerably improved squeezing and nonclassicality and, hence, significantly higher amount of entanglement in comparison to the usual quantum mechanical models. Both the nonclassicality and the entanglement can be enhanced further by increasing the noncommutativity of the underlying space. In addition, we find as a by-product some rare explicit minimum uncertainty quadrature and number squeezed states, i.e., ideal squeezed states.

Polarization Structure of Quantum Light Fields: A New Insight. 2: Generalized Coherent States, Squeezing and Geometric Phases

V. P. Karassiov

Within the new description of the polarization structure of quantum light (given in Part I) some types of generalized coherent states related to the polarization SU(2) group are examined. With their help we give a quasiclassical description of polarization properties of light fields and discuss the concept of squeezing and uncertainty relations for multimode light in the polarization quantum optics. As a consequence, a new classification of polarization states of quantum light is obtained. We also derive geometric phases acquired by different quantum light beams transmitted through "polarization rotators".

Polarization squeezing and continuous-variable polarization entanglement

Natalia Korolkova, Gerd Leuchs, R. Loudon +2 more

A concept of polarization entanglement for continuous variables is introduced. For this purpose the Stokes-parameter operators and the associated Poincar\'e sphere, which describe the quantum-optical polarization properties of light, are defined and their basic properties are reviewed. The general features of the Stokes operators are illustrated by evaluation of their means and variances for a range of simple polarization states. Some of the examples show polarization squeezing, in which the variances of one or more Stokes parameters are smaller than the coherent-state value. The main object of the paper is the application of these concepts to bright squeezed light. It is shown that a light beam formed by interference of two orthogonally polarized quadrature-squeezed beams exhibits squeezing in some of the Stokes parameters. Passage of such a primary polarization-squeezed beam through suitable optical components generates a pair of polarization-entangled light beams with the nature of a two-mode squeezed state. Implementation of these schemes using the double-fiber Sagnac interferometer provides an efficient method for the generation of bright nonclassical polarization states. The important advantage of these nonclassical polarization states for quantum communication is the possibility of experimentally determining all of the relevant conjugate variables of both squeezed and entangled fields using only linear optical elements followed by direct detection.

Classical-Nonclassical Polarity of Gaussian States

Jiru Liu, Wenchao Ge, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

Gaussian states with nonclassical properties such as squeezing and entanglement serve as crucial resources for quantum information processing. Accurately quantifying these properties within multimode Gaussian states has posed some challenges. To address this, we introduce a unified quantification: the "classical-nonclassical polarity," represented by P. For a single mode, a positive value of P captures the reduced minimum quadrature uncertainty below the vacuum noise, while a negative value represents an enlarged uncertainty due to classical mixtures. For multimode systems, a positive P indicates bipartite quantum entanglement. We show that the sum of the total classical-nonclassical polarity is conserved under arbitrary linear optical transformations for any two-mode and three-mode Gaussian states. For any pure multimode Gaussian state, the total classical-nonclassical polarity equals the sum of the mean photon number from single-mode squeezing and two-mode squeezing. Our results provide a new perspective on the quantitative relation between single-mode nonclassicality and entanglement, which may find applications in a unified resource theory of nonclassical features.

Continuous-variable polarization entanglement

Natalia Korolkova, J. Heersink, Christine Silberhorn +3 more

Quantum information with continuous variables conventionally exploits quantum variables with canonic: commutation relations, like position and momentum, or quadrature field components. In contrast, this contribution is devoted to quantum continuous polarization variables. The relevant observabIes are quantum Stokes operators which obey the SU(2) algebra with a commutator which is not a c-number but an operator. In this paper, we review the concept of polarization squeezing and the new concept of continuous-variable polarization entanglement using quantum Stokes parameters. We discuss the prospects and specific features of such nonclassical polarization states for quantum communication.
