The dynamics of open quantum systems: accessibility results

Abstract

Abstract In this paper we study the accessibility properties of finite dimensional (N‐level) open quantum systems in the presence of dissipation and relaxation described by the Lindblad master equation. We specifically focus on the unital Lindbladian case where general results can be obtained. The theory of transitive Lie‐group actions is used to classify the system Lie‐algebras of the Lindblad equation for which the reachable sets have nonempty interior. For the special case of n ‐coupled spin‐1/2 systems, we obtain a particularly simple characterization. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Kontrollierbarkeitsaspekte der Lindblad-Kossakowski Master-Gleichung : Ein Lie-theoretischer Ansatz

Kurniawan, Indra

One main task, which is considerably important in many applications in quantum control, is to explore the possibilities of steering a quantum system from an initial state to a target state. This thesis focuses on fundamental control-theoretical issues of quantum dynamics described by the Lindblad-Kossakowski master equation which arises as a bilinear control system on some underlying real vector spaces, e.g controllability aspects and the structure of reachable sets. Based on Lie-algebraic methods from nonlinear control theory, the thesis presents a unified approach to control problems of finite dimensional closed and open quantum systems. In particular, a simplified treatment for controllability of closed quantum systems as well as new accessibility results for open quantum systems are obtained. The main tools to derive the results are the well-known classifications of all matrix Lie groups which act transitively on Grassmann manifolds, and respectively, on real vector spaces without the origin. It is also shown in this thesis that accessibiity of the Lindblad-Kossakowski master equation is a generic property. Moreover, based on the theoretical accessibility results, an algorithm is developed to decide when the Lindblad-Kossakowski master equation is accessible.

Controllability Aspects of Quantum Dynamics: A Unified Approach for Closed and Open Systems

I. Kurniawan, Gunther Dirr, Uwe Helmke B

Knowledge about to what extent quantum dynamical systems can be steered by coherent controls is indispensable for future developments in quantum technology. The purpose of this paper is to analyze such controllability aspects for finite dimensional bilinear quantum control systems. We use a unified approach based on Lie-algebraic methods from nonlinear control theory to revisit known and to establish new results for closed and open quantum systems. In particular, we provide a simplified characterization of different notions of controllability for closed quantum systems described by the Liouville-von Neumann equation. We derive new necessary and sufficient conditions for accessibility of open quantum systems modelled by the Lindblad-Kossakowski master equation. To this end, we exploit a well-studied topic of differential geometry, namely the classification of all matrix Lie-groups which act transitively on the Grassmann manifold or the punctured Euclidean space. For the special case of coupled spin-1/2 systems, we obtain a remarkably simple characterization of accessibility. These accessibility results correct and refine previous statements in the quantum control literature.

Time optimal factorizations on compact Lie groups

Gunther Dirr, Uwe Helmke B, Martin Kleinsteuber

Abstract In this paper we study the relationship between factorization problems on SU(2n) or more generally on compact Lie groups G and time optimal control problems. Both types of problems naturally arise in physics, such as in quantum computing and in controlling coupled spin systems (NMR‐spectroscopy). In the first part we show that certain factorization problems can be reformulated as time optimal control problems on G. In the second part a necessary condition for the existence of finite optimal factorizations is discussed. At the end we illustrate our results by an example on Euler angle factorizations. CONTROLLABILITY OF OPEN QUANTUM SYSTEMS

Andreea Grigoriu, HERSCHEL A. RABITZ, Gabriel Turinici

The problem of controllability of open quantum systems (i.e., quantum systems interacting with an environment), whose dynamics is described by a non-Markowian master equation is addressed. The manipulations of the dynamics is realized with both a laser eld and a tailored nonequilibrium, and generally time-dependent, state of the surrounding environment. Lie algebra theory is used to characterize the structures of the reachable states sets and to prove controllability. The theoretical results are supported by examples.

Non-Equilibrium Properties of Open Quantum Systems

I. Vakulchyk

We study two classes of open systems: discrete-time quantum walks (a type of Floquet-engineered discrete quantum map) and the Lindblad master equation (a general framework of dissipative quantum systems), focusing on the non-equilibrium properties of these systems. We study localization and delocalization phenomena, soliton-like excitations, and quasi-stationary properties of open quantum systems.

Non‐equilibrium properties of mesoscopic systems – functional renormalization group approach

Thomas Pruschke, Riccardo Gezzi, V. Meden

Abstract Using the Keldysh technique for non‐equilibrium interacting many‐particle systems, the concept of the functional renormalization is extended to non‐equilibrium situations. The approach is completely general and thus allows calculations for both stationary and time‐dependent situations. As a specific example we present results for the stationary state transport through a quantum dot with finite bias voltage. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
