A numerical test of the conjectured exact S-matrix of the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field

Abstract

The finite-size scaling functions of the correlation lengths in the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field are calculated numerically. The asymptotic behaviour in the limit of large scaling variables is studied and can be used to estimate the particle masses and coupling constants of the underlying effective field theory. The results are consistent with the conjectured minimal S-matrix obtained from the conformal bootstrap.

Exact results for the two-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field: Tests of finite-size scaling theory

Borko Stošć, S. Milošević, Eugene Stanley

We use the transfer-matrix method to calculate density-of-states (DOS) functions for fully finite Ising-model systems. In this way, we obtain expressions for the corresponding partition functions for systems of sizes up to 12\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}12 in zero field and up to 8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}8 in nonzero external magnetic field. We also establish a way of representing the DOS functions, in terms of the suitably scaled variables, that reveals a remarkably rapid convergence of these functions towards their thermodynamic limiting values as the system size increases. This rapid convergence implies that results obtained for systems of small sizes contain a surprisingly large amount of information about the behavior of infinite systems. In particular, we demonstrate that the finite-size-scaling-theory predictions are satisfied for small systems (treated exactly via this method) comparably well as for much larger systems (treated approximately via the Monte Carlo method). In addition, applying the method to the square Ising model in a nonzero field, we discover that the DOS functions for small systems display a regularity that one would expect to appear only for very large systems.

The two-dimensional Ising model in the magnetic field: a numerical check of Zamolodchikov's conjecture

Malte Henkel, Hubert Saleur

The authors calculate numerically the transfer matrix spectrum of the 2D Ising model at T=T c and in a magnetic field h not=0. In the limit h to 0, their results reproduce the mass spectrum conjectured by Zamolodchikov (1988). Scaling functions are also studied.

Short distance behaviour of correlators in the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field

Caselle, M, Grinza, P, Magnoli, N

We study the spin-spin, spin-energy and energy-energy correlators in the 2d Ising model perturbed by a magnetic field. We compare the results of a set of high precision Montecarlo simulations with the predictions of two different approximations: the Form Factor approach, based on the exact S-matrix description of the model, and a short distance perturbative expansion around the conformal point. Both methods give very good results, the first one performs better for distances larger than the correlation length, while the second one is more precise for distances smaller than the correlation length. In order to improve this agreement we extend the perturbative analysis to the second order in the derivatives of the OPE constants.

Critical amplitudes and mass spectrum of the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field

Caselle, M, Hasenbusch, M

We compute the spectrum and several critical amplitudes of the two dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field with the transfer matrix method. The three lightest masses and their overlaps with the spin and the energy operators are computed on lattices of a width up to L=21. In extracting the continuum results we also take into account the corrections to scaling due to irrelevant operators. In contrast with previous Monte Carlo simulations our final results are in perfect agreement with the predictions of S-matrix and conformal field theory. We also obtain the amplitudes of some of the subleading corrections, for which no S-matrix prediction has yet been obtained.

Corner transfer matrix approach to the Yang-Lee singularity in the two-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field

Vladimir V. Mangazeev, Bryte Hagan, Vladimir V. Bazhanov

We study the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model in a complex magnetic field in the vicinity of the Yang-Lee edge singularity. By using Baxter's variational corner transfer matrix method combined with analytic techniques, we numerically calculate the scaling function and obtain an accurate estimate of the location of the Yang-Lee singularity. The existing series expansions for susceptibility of the 2D Ising model on a triangular lattice by Chan, Guttmann, Nickel, and Perk allowed us to substantially enhance the accuracy of our calculations. Our results are in excellent agreement with the Ising field theory calculations by Fonseca, Zamolodchikov, and the recent work by Xu and Zamolodchikov. In particular, we numerically confirm an agreement between the leading singular behavior of the scaling function and the predictions of the M_{2/5} conformal field theory.

INTEGRALS OF MOTION AND S-MATRIX OF THE (SCALED) T = T c ISING MODEL WITH MAGNETIC FIELD

Al.B. Zamolodchikov

It is shown that the field theory describing the scaling limit of T = T c Ising model with nonzero magnetic field possesses a number of nontrivial local integrals of motion. The exact mass spectrum and S-matrix of this field theory is conjectured.
