Observability of the Sign Change of Spinors under 2 π Rotations

Abstract

We consider the observability of the sign change of spinors under $2\ensuremath{\pi}$ rotations. We show that in certain circumstances there are observable consequences of such rotations, contrary to the classical case. We suggest experiments which can in principle be done to demonstrate such effects.

Critical Remark on the Observability of the Sign Change of Spinors under 2π Rotations

Gerhard C. Hegerfeldt, K. Kraus

In a recent paper, Aharonov and Susskind claimed rotations by 2π to have observable effects on spinors. Their reasoning is shown to be inconclusive.Received 21 September 1967DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRev.170.1185©1968 American Physical Society

On the phase change of a spinor due to a rotation through 2 pi

W Gough

Experiments on neutron interference do not prove beyond dispute that the wavefunction of a spinor has periodicity 4 pi with respect to a rotation of the coordinate axes. The observed sign change in the wavefunction after one Larmor revolution could be explained by a changing phase factor due to 'tumble'. The case for and against tumble is briefly considered.

Is the sign change of spinors under 2π rotations observable?

J. S. Dowker

Hegerfeldt and Kraus's criticisms (see abstr. A42300 of 1968) of Aharonov and Susskind's discussion (see abstr. A27919 of 1967) of the above question are investigated. It is shown that the rotation operator applied to a wave function can be equivalent to solving Schrodinger's equation if gravitational fields are present. The specific example of quantum mechanics on a cone is considered in detail.

Dynamical Rotations of Spinors and Other Quantum Systems

Gerald T. Moore

The adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics is used to investigate the dynamical rotations of quantum systems which are coupled to an external rotating field. The use of such rotations in combination with interference experiments in principle renders the sign change of spinors under 2π rotations observable. Some practical difficulties of such experiments are mentioned.

The curious problem of spinor rotation

Mark P. Silverman

Can the sign change of a spinor wavefunction rotated by 360 degrees be observed? If so, does this violate any basic quantum mechanical principles? The answers are yes and no, respectively. Tests of this fundamental quantum mechanical prediction are discussed, and the close analogy between the experimental methods employed and well-known processes in classical physical optics is pointed out.

Observability of2πrotations around an Aharonov-Bohm solenoid

P. A. Horváthy

A rotation by 2\ensuremath{\pi} around an Aharanov-Bohm solenoid is shown to change the wave function of a charged spinless particle by a phase factor \ensuremath{\chi}=exp(ie\ensuremath{\varphi}/\ensuremath{\Elzxh}). For fermions the effect manifests itself as a phase shift in addition to the well-known sign change. A gedanken experiment is proposed for observation.
