Superconducting correlations in Hubbard chains with correlated hopping

Abstract

We consider an extended one-dimensional Hubbard model in which the magnitude of the hopping between two sites for particles with given spin depends on the occupation of the states with opposite spin at both sites. Diagonalizing exactly finite-size chains, and using known results of conformal field theory we delimit the regions of parameters for which two particles bind and the pair superconducting correlation functions are the dominant ones at large distances. For Coulomb repulsion U smaller than a critical density-dependent value ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$ and any density, there are ranges of the ratios of the hopping parameters for which the superconducting fluctuations dominate. At half filling, for parameters within this range, a transition from a regime with dominant superconducting correlations to an insulating state takes place as a function of U. We also study the model for parameters near a recently found exactly solvable limit in which the number of doubly occupied sites is conserved.

Ground-state phase diagram of an extended Hubbard chain with correlated hopping at half-filling

Liliana Arrachea, Eduardo R. Gagliano, Armando A. Aligia

We consider a generalized Hubbard model with on-site interaction U, nearest-neighbor repulsion V, and nearest-neighbor hopping for spin \ensuremath{\sigma}, which depends on the sum of particles ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}\ensuremath{-}|\mathrm{A}\mathrm{m}}$ with opposite spin in the two sites involved. The hopping matrix elements are denoted by ${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$,${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$,${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$ for ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}\ensuremath{-}|\mathrm{A}\mathrm{m}}$=0,1,2, respectively. For 0${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$=${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$, we have determined the regions of parameters for which the ground-state (GS) of the one-dimensional system is a charge-density wave (CDW), a spin-density wave (SDW), or a metal (M), using Hartree-Fock, exact diagonalization of finite chains and quantum Monte Carlo. The results agree qualitatively with the exactly solvable limit of ${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$=0. For 0${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$=${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$, the GS is a M for sufficiently low values of U and V. In contrast, when ${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$+${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$-${2\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$=0, our results suggest that the GS is either a CDW or a SDW, with the boundary between them lying near the line U=2V.

Pairing in a tight-binding model with occupation-dependent hopping rate: Exact diagonalization study

H. Q. Lin, J. E. Hirsch

The Hubbard model with occupation-dependent hopping rate exhibits superconductivity in a wide range of parameters within mean-field (BCS) theory. Here we study pair binding energies in this model for small clusters by exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. The model is defined by on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions U and V, and occupation-dependent hopping rate t(n)=t+n\ensuremath{\Delta}t. We present results for one-dimensional chains and for two-dimensional square lattices of sizes 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4, 6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}6, and 8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}8. As a function of carrier density n the pair binding energy first increases and then decreases, and vanishes beyond a critical density. BCS results for the pair binding energy are found to be in remarkably good agreement with the exact results. In particular, BCS theory accurately reproduces the range of interaction parameters where pair binding exists in the exact solution. The model is found to exhibit no tendency to phase separation or clustering of more than two particles even for parameters giving rise to strong pair binding, in contrast to other tight-binding models where pairing occurs.

Anderson-Mott transition in a disordered Hubbard chain with correlated hopping

Francesca Battista, Alberto Camjayi, Liliana Arrachea

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the Anderson-Hubbard model with correlated hopping at half-filling in one dimension. The Hamiltonian has a local Coulomb repulsion $U$ and a disorder potential with local energies randomly distributed in the interval $(\ensuremath{-}W,+W)$ with equal probability, acting on the singly occupied sites. The hopping process which modifies the number of doubly occupied sites is forbidden. The hopping between nearest-neighbor singly occupied and empty sites or between singly occupied and doubly occupied sites has the same amplitude $t$. We identify three different phases as functions of the disorder amplitude $W$ and Coulomb interaction strength $U>0$. When $U<4t$ the system shows a metallic phase: (i) only when no disorder is present $W=0$ or an Anderson-localized phase, (ii) when disorder is introduced $W\ensuremath{\ne}0$. When $U>4t$ the Anderson-localized phase survives as long as disorder effects dominate on the interaction effects, otherwise a Mott-insulator phase (iii) arises. Phases (i) and (ii) are characterized by a finite density of doublons and a vanishing charge gap among the ground state and the excited states. Phase (iii) is characterized by the vanishing density of doublons and a finite gap for the charge excitations.

Triplet superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional systems

Armando A. Aligia, Liliana Arrachea

We study a Hubbard Hamiltonian, including a quite general nearest-neighbor interaction, parametrized by repulsion V, exchange interactions ${J}_{z}{,J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}},$ bond-charge interaction X, and hopping of pairs W. The case of correlated hopping, in which the hopping between nearest neighbors depends upon the occupation of the two sites involved, is also described by the model for sufficiently weak interactions. We study the model in one dimension with usual continuum-limit field theory techniques, and determine the phase diagram. For arbitrary filling, we find a very simple necessary condition for the existence of dominant triplet superconducting correlations at large distance in the spin SU(2) symmetric case: $4V+J<0.$ In the correlated-hopping model, the three-body interaction should be negative for positive V. We also compare the predictions of this weak-coupling treatment with numerical exact results for the correlated-hopping model obtained by diagonalizing small chains and using a Berry phase to determine the opening of the spin gap.

Superconductivity in the Hubbard model with correlated hopping: Slave-boson study

Bogdan R. Bułka

Slave boson mean-field studies of the ground state of the Hubbard model with correlated hopping were performed. The approach qualitatively recovers the exact results for the case when the hopping integral $t$ equals the correlated hopping integral $X.$ The phase diagram for the strongly correlated state with only singly occupied sites, the weakly correlated state, where single and double occupation is allowed, and for the superconducting state, was determined for any value of $X$ and any electron concentration $n.$ At the half-filled band $(n=1)$ a direct transition from the superconductor to the Mott insulator was found. In the region of strong correlations the superconducting solution is stable for $n$ close to 1, in contrast to the case of weak correlations, in which superconductivity occurs at $n\ensuremath{\approx}0$ and $n\ensuremath{\approx}2.$ We have also found that strong correlations change the characteristics of the superconducting phase, e.g., the gap in the excitation spectrum exhibits a nonexponential dependence on the on-site Coulomb integral $U$ close to the phase-transition point.

Superconductivity and antiferromagnetism for an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian: Role of correlated hopping in a single-band model

G.A. Lara, G. G. Cabrera

An extended Hubbard model for a single band, including Coulomb repulsion and correlated hopping between nearest neighbors, is studied using a generalized mean-field approach. Antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are probed for arbitrary occupation number, near and away from half filling. Binding of pairs in the superconducting state of this purely repulsive model is mediated by the correlated hopping in the form of a covalent-bond configuration, with partial intrasite and intersite pairings. A region of coexistence is conjectured, the superconductivity being suppressed by the saturation of the staggered magnetic moment. Singlet superconducting nonmagnetic states are obtained for the almost-empty- or full-band cases. On the other hand, antiferromagnetism induces mixed s- and p-type superconductivities in the neighborhood of half filling.
