Dressed-atom approach to strong-field double-resonance fluorescence with laser phase fluctuations

Abstract

We discuss analytically the resonance fluorescence of a three-level ladder system whose two transitions are simultaneously saturated by the fields from two lasers. The laser fields have fluctuating phases, which may be correlated to some extent. We generalize the dressed-atom approach of Cohen-Tannoudji and Reynaud [J. Phys. B 10, 345 (1977)] to deal with phase fluctuations under conditions of overall two-photon resonance, but not single-photon resonance on the individual transitions. In this respect we also generalize the master-equation approach of Lawande, Puri, and D'Souza [Phys. Rev. A 33, 2504 (1986)]. The effect of spontaneous emission and laser fluctuations on the resonance fluorescence quintet is discussed in detail, and shown to marked effects. We also investigate the effect of these quantities on the steady-state dressed-atom occupation probabilities, and point out that the double-resonance experiment can be used to prepare the atom in a given dressed state with high probability.

Dressed-atom description of resonance fluorescence and absorption spectra of a multi-level atom in an intense laser beam

Claude N. Cohen-Tannoudji, Serge Reynaud

A dressed-atom approach to resonance fluorescence in intense laser fields is presented. Simple and general results are derived which include the now well known predictions concerning two-level atoms but are not restricted to such simple cases. The positions of the various components of the fluorescence and absorption spectra are given by the allowed Bohr frequencies of the total system: atom+laser mode (dressed atom). The master equation, describing spontaneous emission from the dressed atom is solved in the limit of high intensities. Simple expressions, taking into account the effect of cascades, are derived for the widths of the components.

Coherently controlled emission from two atoms dressed via a standing wave laser field

N. A. Enaki, Nelly Ciobanu, Miguel Orszag

The influence of the standing wave amplitude on the resonance fluorescence of a three-level system of radiators is discussed. Great attention is devoted to the peculiarities of dressed states in the standing wave and the exchange integrals between two atoms situated in the anti-nodes or the nodes. The correlation functions of emitted photons at two dressed frequencies were obtained. It is shown that in the case when the distance between two atoms is smaller than the wavelength of the field, the emitted photons are strongly correlated. As was observed, for large values of laser field intensity, the control of spontaneous emission is possible at two frequencies as well as the atom–atom interaction process. The dependence of the fluorescent light spectrum as a function of the position of two atoms dressed in the standing wave is investigated.

One- and two-photon resonance fluorescence of a three-level atom at high photon densities

Constantine Mavroyannis, M. P. Sharma

We consider the possible physical processes that may arise in a three-level atom when only two of its levels interact with a strong electromagnetic field and when the atomic transition frequency is nearly equal to once and twice the frequency of the laser field, respectively. There have been found pronounced cooperative effects in the spectrum of the two-level system, which is in resonance with the laser field, arising from the presence of the third level. The excitation spectra describing the transitions from the first excited state into the second excited state and from that to the ground state consist, apart from the two central peaks, of two pairs of sidebands which are induced by the laser field of the neighbouring system. Detailed expressions of the spectral functions for the physical processes of one- and two-photon resonance fluorescence have been derived and discussed in the limit of high photon densities. The excitation spectrum of the low frequency modes has been considered and discussed in detail. It is found that quantum beats in spontaneous emission may appear in the spectra of the one- and two-photon resonance fluorescence arising from the interference between the two atomic transition frequencies and the frequency of the laser field. The importance of the low frequency modes that occur in the processes in question has been pointed out.

Collective resonance fluorescence in an intense laser field with phase and amplitude fluctuations

A.S. Shumovsky, R. Tanaś, Tran Quang

The collective resonance fluorescence from a system of two-level atoms resonantly driven by a strong laser field with the phase and amplitude fluctuations is considered. The effect of the laser field fluctuations on the spectrum as well as the degrees of the second-order coherence of the fluorescent field is discussed in detail for the off-resonance case.

Time-dependent spectrum of resonance fluorescence for atoms prepared in pure dressed states

Ning Lü, P. R. Berman, Yue Bai +2 more

We study the transient fluorescence spectra of two-level atoms driven by a strong optical field when the atoms are initially prepared in pure dressed states of the atom-field Hamiltonian. Spectra obtained here differ qualitatively from those observed in the steady state. In the case of steady-state resonant excitation, a three-peaked spectrum symmetric about the laser frequency is obtained; with pure-dressed-state preparation, the symmetry of the spectrum about the driving field is broken---one side peak is initially enhanced and the other is initially suppressed. Furthermore, the temporal oscillations of fluorescence intensity observed in previous calculations of transient fluorescence spectra appropriate to atoms prepared in a superposition of dressed states [J. H. Eberly et al., J. Phys. B 13, 217 (1980)] are suppressed when pure-dressed-state preparation is considered.

Investigation of resonance fluorescence in intense laser field via dressed atom approach

In F

The resonance fluorescence of an atom in an intense laser field was investigated via dressed atom approach. The steady st te solution of the master ,equation was obtained, in which the damping of the photon in laser mode was compensated by introducing a exciting term in the master equation. The shape and intensity of the resonance fluoresoenoe was given. Some physios means was discussed.
