Rigorous formulation of the Kohn and Sham theory

Abstract

The theory of Kohn and Sham treats a system of interacting electrons by establishing a correspondence between this system and a noninteracting system. In this paper we develop a new formulation of this theory, which differs from the original by its rigor and by the more correct treatment of the kinetic energy term. This new formulation has the additional advantage that it bypasses the $v$ representability requisite of the original Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham theory.

A Rigorous Extension of the Kohn-Sham Equation for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

Koichi Kusakabe

By introducing a set of auxiliary equations representing a many-body system, we have derived an extension of the Kohn-Sham scheme for the density functional theory. These equations consist of a Kohn-Sham-type equation determining single-particle orbitals and an eigen-value equation for an effective many-body problem. A variational method similar to the Kohn-Sham technique was utilized to derive effective interactions as well as effective potentials without artificial substitution of a Hubbard-type interaction and a mean-field correction in the energy functional. The second equation is described by an effective many-body Hamiltonian with both 2-body interactions and mean-field terms. Rigorous formulation of the extended Kohn-Sham equation is also given in accordance with the Hadjisavvas-Theophilou formulation. Our formulation can be interpreted as a way to define models of the strongly correlated electron systems, e.g. the Hubbard model

Generalized Kohn-Sham Density-Functional Theory via Effective Action Formalism

Marat Valiev, Gayanath Fernando

We present a rigorous formulation of generalized Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This provides a straightforward Kohn-Sham description of many-body systems based not only on particle-density but also on any other observable. We illustrate the formalism for the case of a particle-density based description of a nonrelativistic many-electron system. We obtain a simple diagrammatic expansion of the exchange-correlation functional in terms of Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies; develop systematic Kohn-Sham formulation for one-electron propagators and many-body excitation energies. This work is ideally suited for practical applications and provides a rigorous basis for a systematic development of the existing body of first-principles calculations in a controllable fashion.

Ab initioapproach for many-electron systems without invoking orbitals: An integral formulation of density-functional theory

Weitao Yang

A new approach for the calculation of ground states of many-electron systems is proposed via an integral formulation of the Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. Only equations for the total electron density are involved; orbitals are not employed. Exchange and correlation effects are incorporated. In place of the set of single-electron equations, the total electron density is explicitly expressed in terms of the Kohn-Sham effective local potential through multidimensional integrations. The development is based on the first-order density matrix as obtained from the one-body Green's function in polygonal and Fourier path-integral representations. This might open up the possibility of ab initio calculations for molecules with very many electrons. It also provides explicit solutions to two long-standing problems: electron kinetic energy and momentum density as functionals of the total electron density. The formulation can also be used in calculations for general fermions.

Exposing minimal composition of Kohn–Sham theory and its extendability

Hitoshi Nakada

Abstract Reducing the many-fermion problem to a set of single-particle (s.p.) equations, the Kohn–Sham (KS) theory has provided a practical tool to implement ab initio calculations of ground-state energies and densities in many-electron systems. There have been attempts to extend the KS theory so that it could describe other physical quantities, or it could be applied to other many-fermion systems. By generalizing and reformulating the KS theory in terms of the 1-body density matrix, we expose the minimal composition of the theory that enables the reduction of the many-fermion problem to the s.p. equations. Based on the reformulation, several basic issues are reconsidered. The v- and N-representabilities for the KS theory are distinguished from those for the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem. Criteria for the extendability of the KS theory are addressed.

Density-Functional Theory for Strongly Interacting Electrons

Paola Gori‐Giorgi, Michael Seidl, Giovanni Vignale

We present an alternative to the Kohn-Sham formulation of density-functional theory for the ground-state properties of strongly interacting electronic systems. The idea is to start from the limit of zero kinetic energy and systematically expand the universal energy functional of the density in powers of a "coupling constant" that controls the magnitude of the kinetic energy. The problem of minimizing the energy is reduced to the solution of a strictly correlated electron problem in the presence of an effective potential, which in our theory plays the same role as the Kohn-Sham potential plays in the traditional formulation. We discuss several schemes for approximating the energy functional, and report preliminary results for low-density quantum dots.

Quantal Density Functional Theory of Degenerate States

Viraht Sahni, Xiao‐Yin Pan

The treatment of degenerate states within Kohn-Sham density functional theory is a problem of long-standing and current interest. We propose a solution to this mapping from the interacting degenerate system to that of the noninteracting fermion model whereby the equivalent density and energy are obtained via the unifying physical framework of quantal density functional theory. We describe the quantal theory of both ground and excited degenerate states, and for the cases of both pure state and ensemble v-representable densities. The quantal description further provides a rigorous physical interpretation of the corresponding Kohn-Sham energy functionals of the density, ensemble density, bidensity and ensemble bidensity, and of their respective functional derivatives. We conclude with examples of the mappings within the quantal theory.
